Attached info on latest requirements for getting a Turkish residency permit will be distressing for some. Amount of monthly income required has risen again. Reflects soaring cost of living in Türkiye but fear not everyone will be able to comply.

Happy Christmas to all those celebrating from an Istanbul so sunny it hardly even feels like winter!

While in Izmir went to see newly restored church of St John in #Alsancak & noticed this memorial to a Brit from #Doncaster who came to sad end while working as driver on Ottoman railway.

Thoroughly enjoyed recent visit to #Albania so been back to my bookshelves to read these - Robert Carver’s 1998 travelogue The Accursed Mountains: Journeys in Albania, and Lea Ypi’s 2021 memoir Free: Coming of Age at the End of History which describes a childhood during which a quarrel over Coke can

Had read that #Izmir’s Şadırvanlı Cami’s şadırvan in bazaar had been destroyed but pleased to find it still standing, even if frescoed dome looked a bit battered.

In #Alsancak the huge C19th Tekel factory nr the station now houses a cultural centre with art gallery, library, cafes and a splendid archaeological collection including friezes from #Belevi mausoleum and spectacular terracotta sarcophagi from #Clazomenae dating back to C7th BC.

#İzmir had acquired two magnificent museums since my last visit. In #Bornova the C19th Mattheys Köşkü now houses Arkas Sanat, a collection of carpets dating back to C16th with a real wow factor. Gardens have models of other local Levantine mansions.

And STILL we’re having to cope with dangerous chaos of #Tophane tram stop. This is out of season… Yet believe new stop has been built.

Two big changes to #İzmir landscape since last visit. First was demolition of huge Belediye blding that used to stand on plot to right of clock tower. Second was new wall along Kordon to guard against sea surges. Planting on outside makes it less alarming than I’d feared.

One change since my last visit to #Izmir was that it had embraced street art in a big way.

Halfway down Izmir’s Anafartalar Caddesi it crosses Eşrefpaşa Caddesi, heart of old Jewish part of town. One v basic hotel here is actually last (I believe) galleried cortejo, a communal Jewish living space. In grounds of Agora supposed home of Sabbatai Sevi has been restored. Late John Freely told

Other examples crop up around Kemeraltı bazaar area.

My affection for #İzmir’s Anafartalar Caddesi stems partly from traces of much grander past that line it. Not just Roman Agora but also things like Dönertaş Sebil (1814), named for revolving column at corner & designed in style unique to Izmir.

Have v soft spot for #Izmir’s Anafartalar Caddesi, a rare piece of 1990s’ Turkey surviving into 2020s. TBH had expected to find it gentrified into a 2nd Alsancak. Instead remains like Brick Lane in London before that gentrified - a place on the margins, poor, neglected but vibrant regardless.

This was where I started out on my pursuit of Gertrude Bell in Turkey. She never came here but it was already in existence by time she visited and so seemed a good place to base myself while exploring Izmir. In Anafartalar Caddesi not far from ruined Agora.

The sun’s out. The tourists have gone. Why not sit outside & enjoy ourselves? #Ayvalık today

Is this an #İzmir thing I didn’t know about or had forgotten? Lentil soup flavoured w/hot butter? Don’t remember it elsewhere.

This morning in #İzmir food market. May be Sunday but that’s not holding anyone back apparently.

Tonight in the Fuar/Kültürpark in #İzmir they were busy getting ready for Yılbaşı/Christmas. Lots of plastic wrappers & empty cardboard boxes. Resident cats were beside themselves!

First narcissi on sale in #Izmir. Hopefully they’ll be in #İstanbul too by the time I get home.
December 5, 2024 at 7:42 PM
Just taken a turn through #İzmir’s Fuar/Kültürpark which is looking in better shape than on last visit. Stopped to admire Kaskatlı Havuzu (pool), the shape of which follows ground plan of lost Greek church - left image shows “narthex” end, right shows “apse”.
