No, AI will not make programers obscolete.

I fully expect this post to offend people on both sides of the AI screaming match, but a considered approach has worked reasonably well for me, at least.

A few days back, I wrote about how AI can be useful, and that we ignore or reject it at our peril. Paradoxically, as several people pointed out, some not very politely, longer-term productivity in many (maybe most) shops that use AI code generation has gone down. That's absolutely true.

High school students using AI to write college application essays that are then graded by AI from admissions departments is a great example of how AI usage devalues systems while people can accurately point to “productivity gains” from using AI.

Let's talk about AI Hype and the Theory of Constraints. From a business perspective, the key metric is "lead time." The time it takes to get an idea to the point where it's producing revenue ("in the customer's hands").

It's a truism that the only constant in software engineering is change, but that doesn't make it any less accurate. A hidebound university system (with a few notable exceptions) is failing us.

Even if the fantasy that AI will speed coding by 100% or more were true, it would not decrease lead time. Firing half of your people because of an immagined 100% improvement in the other half will also not relieve the bottleneck.

It's complete BS to say "AI creates code in seconds." That's just a lie. AI creates a first draft in seconds, and that draft has to be extensively edited before it's even marginally acceptable as production-quality code. It moves the work from authoring to editing.

There seems to be an Influenza in Iran as I heard people are hospitalized. It has ths side-effect of fever but with more pains. But it is the Winter makes sense cause of the water.

There was a misunderstanding between me and the community that I'm still there. I'm not talking about how bad moderation is or how p2y in there, but I'm pointing into another community and I see the parties in the community. Well, sorry if my critics are offending.
