The St John family polyptych, erected in 1615 in St Mary's, Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire. It has two sets of doors and eleven painted panels. Though a difficult subject to photograph, this image has been recognized as one of the finest photographic records of the monument.
Monument to Colonel William Rudhale (d.1651) at St Mary's, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. He is shown in Roman armour with a sword, cloak and shield. The plinth on which the effigy stands is decorated with military reliefs. Number 74 in "Country Church Monuments".

The Opening of the Sixth Seal. An extraordinary painted glass window by William Collins (1788-1847), c.1830. The apocalyptic chaos of crumbling rocks, terrified humanity fleeing divine judgment, all achieved through a virtuoso performance of glass-painting techniques. St Andrew's, Redbourne, Lincs.

The early-to-mid-12th century doorway at Foston, Yorkshire North Riding. As Pevsner says: "Uncommonly fancifully and crisply decorated". The hood-mould has a series of medallions with various scenes.

Monumental brass commemorating Ralph St Ledger (d.1470) and his wife Anne (Prophete) at Ulcombe, Kent. After his death she married John Elingbridge (d.1473) and appears on a second brass commemorating him at Merstham, Surrey.

The monumental brass commemorating William Maydestone (d.1419) at Ulcombe, Kent. Maydestone's will discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D9... states he wishes to be buried in Ledes (Leeds Priory). This suggests the tomb was moved to Ulcombe when the Priory was dissolved in 1539 by Henry VIII.

Exeter Cathedral bosses. These three are in the vaulting of the Presbytery and date from the late 13th century. The first (with a removable plug in the centre, possibly for a chandelier) depicts Samson rending the Lion's Jaws, the second the Coronation of the Virgin, and the third the Crucifixion.

"The Nativity" by Gerard van Honthorst, 1620s, Exeter Cathedral. Van Honthorst (1592-1656) was a Dutch Golden Age painter nicknamed "Gerard of the Nights" for his mastery of candlelit scenes. Trained in Utrecht, he studied Caravaggio in Rome. He was Court painter to Charles I and European royalty.

Details of an altar frontal, c.1550, Exeter Cathedral. The main figure (left) is of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon and surrounded by rays of light. She is holding the Christ child, who is wearing a crown of twelve stars. One of the five roundels (right) depicts St John the Evangelist.

Detail of the Great East Window in Exeter Cathedral. The top row of panels date from 1304 and depict Abraham, Moses, and Isaiah. The bottom panels depict an archangel, St Michael and St Catherine. These are of c.1470 from elsewhere in the cathedral and placed here in 1751.

The interior of the church at Low Toynton, Lincs in 2003. It was built in 1811 on the foundations of a 12th century church and closed in 1973. It is now in an even more derelict state than seen here. This is the possible fate of many English parish churches.

Heneage Finch, 1st Earl of Nottingham and Lord Chancellor of England (d.1682) is commemorated with this fine monument, possibly by William Stanton, at Ravenstone, Buckinghamshire.

A Knight & Lady under a funeral pall. The monument, probably to Sir John & Elizabeth de Nevill, dates from the first quarter of the 14th century. This unusual memorial was found in a field in the 19th century. They rest their heads on pillows & have dogs at their feet. Stoke Rochford, Lincolnshire.

The east window of St Martin's, Brampton, Cumberland. Stained glass designed by Edward Burne-Jones and made by Morris & Co., 1880-1. This is some of the best glass in the county.

Monument to Charles Sergison (d.1732), an English Royal Navy administrator. It is by Thomas Adye and depicts Prudence and a putto holding a medallion with a portrait relief of Sergison. She views the medallion in a mirror. It is Adye's best work and was apparently carved in Italy. Cuckfield, Sussex.

Stanton Fitzwarren font unwrapped. The font dates from c.1180 and depicts the eight Virtues and eight Vices. The Virtues carry weapons and stand on the Vices, having vanquished them. St Leonard's, Stanton Fitzwarren, Wiltshire.

At eight metres high, probably the tallest monument in a parish church in England. Thomas Foley, 1st Lord Foley (d.1732/3) and his family are depicted on the monument by John Michael Rysbrack, made in 1735-8. Great Witley, Worcestershire.

The chantry chapel and cadaver effigy of Bishop Richard Fox (d.1528), successively Bishop of Exeter, Bath and Wells, Durham, and Winchester. Founder of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. His feet rest on a skull and his crosier (missing the head) is to his left. Winchester Cathedral.

The execution of Charles I, 1649. Painted on boards with the royal arms on the obverse and dated 1676. It was erected by the vicar, John Catlyn. All Saints, Burstwick, Yorkshire East Riding.

"the ymage of deth shotyng at me". Stained glass commemorating Henry Williams (d.1501). Stanford-on-Avon, Nhants. The glass is high up in the tracery lights of the chancel and depicts Death shooting at the kneeling figure of Williams. He requested the glass in his will.

St Thomas Becket church, Fairfield, Kent. Until the early 20th century the church was only accessible by boat. It was extensively renovated in 1912-13 having fallen into disrepair.

The monument to Jane & William Ashburnham, Ashburnham, Sussex. 1675 by John Bushnell. William kneels at the feet of his dying wife, his hands held out in a gesture of despair & helplessness. A flying putto crowns her. I'm currently studying Bushnell with a view to creating a comprehensive biography.
