Opinion: If scientific databases in the Earth and environmental sciences are not adequately supported, we risk losing and potentially needing to replace these resources, an extremely costly, yet preventable, outcome.

As a former nutmegger (CT resident) I was always so deeply glad @blumenthal.senate.gov , @chrismurphyct.bsky.social, and @jimhimes01.bsky.social were representing me. Go get ‘em, Congressmen!!! @whitehouse.senate.gov , @amo.house.gov heads up!!
Blumenthal: "What world is he living in? It is not only contrary to the facts and the truth but utterly despicable. A disgusting betrayal of a country that has bled and fought and died for freedom ... the president's surrender is pathetic and weak."

I think it’s time to follow through on my idea to get more people in my company onboard with open source.
Tomorrow, ESRI are updating their base maps to comply with Trump's EO to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Mt Denali. Here is a simple workflow you can follow to fix this

Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer.

Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵

Some feel good fun! Snails and frogs just want to have, too!
In 2014 Dutch scientists left a hamster wheel outside, to see if wild animals would use it like their domesticated counterparts.

The answer: hell yes! 734 visits from wild mice - plus rats, shrews, slugs ("running" being subjective here) & even frogs and snails.

The apparent reason: fun. Just fun.

What a pleasure to read! I adored pouring over maps of fantastical places when I was young. Still fascinated by maps today..
A great article and belated obituary for Karen Wynn Fonstad, the cartographer who mapped Middle Earth, the Forgotten Realms, and more. I was entranced by her Atlas of Middle Earth, which contributed to my later career as a cartographer!
