The euro showing similar amounts. 6”+ for the lowlands and 15”-25” nearly all rain for the cascades between now and next Thursday.

These are truly epic rain totals being modeled at the moment. If there was any snow pack to speak of it’d be washing out and we’d be talking potential for major floods. For now, just eye candy and minor flooding potential. Still time for things to shift more North toward B.C. or South to NorCal.

These things always tend to shift around as the time nears, but the last couple days models have really panted the bulls eye right on Oregon for next week’s AR event. This map is showing up to 500% of the normal amount of precipitable water pointing directly over Oregon next week.

But they’re terms that describe the weather better than pre-existing terminology. As you can see, “Atmospheric River” is apropos. The system (green ribbon) stretches from North America back to The Philippines. Atmospheric rivers can carry up to 5x the volume of the Mississippi River.

Slow start to winter for Western US mountainous regions. Snowpack is vital to water resources. Excluding Southern Sierra Nevadas little to no snow cover yet. Red ares are <50% of normal as of December 2. There are some hints that things may pick up around mid-late December. For now it’s wait & see.

Murray Krismas to one and all.

Kicking off Gameday and the holiday weekend with my latest wreath design! I’m really excited about this one. This one features a lot of sparkles and uses beautiful patterned velvet ribbon.

Felt like hot cocoa instead of coffee this morning. Also pictured: a 3-lb rabbit that never missed a meal in her life attacking her breakfast like it’s going to get away.

You can see here circled in red model output for surface temperature for Portland,
Next Sunday through Saturday the 6th. The model has waffled a few times from run to run with newer runs at the bottom.

Whether it gets cold, and how cold it gets here in Western Oregon is a question of the location of a block of high pressure expected to set up to our west and extending up into Alaska. Models are still having a hard time resolving this detail.
