Oh the symbolism! COP caught on fire in the heat.

No one injured, thankfully.

(Not my photo, I wasn’t in the Blue Zone at the time — guess I picked a good time to see a bit of Belém!)

I’m learning a ton at COP30, but my most systematic research is on the ice cream at Sorveteria Cairu — famous for their local tropical fruit flavors. Preliminary results: cupuaçu and chocolate is a better combo than açaí and chocolate, though both were delish.

I’m sure the “it’s a war-zone at Columbia” narrative will dominate, but here’s what it looked like at Butler as I walked home tonight

25 hour speak-out today and tomorrow at Columbia. I’ll be there with other political scientists talking about democracy and due process from 7-8pm

The climate emergency is ongoing, the emergency of ICE agents snatching our neighbors off our streets and sending them to gulags is, if not new, newly intensified.

Columbia’s latest statement. I give it an A- (big points for improvement over recent statements, but still room for improvement).

Worried anti-Musk/coup etc protest in NYC would be small (11F with wind chill, and generally demoralized opposition), but was very pleasantly surprised — thousands turned out. Gives me hope

Strands got me today (spoiler alert), cuz the first word I saw was “blueberry” and no self-respecting New Yorker thinks of blueberry as an example of the spangram. I got there eventually, but c’mon NYTimes, remember where you’re from
