"Just because a model correlates with neural and behavioral data, it is not sufficient for us to infer that the model is performing cognition: correlation does not imply cognition."

I would like to share that the family requests donations be made to the Innocence Project (innocenceproject.org/donate/) or the American Civil Liberties Union (action.aclu.org/give/now) in lieu of flowers. 💖💐

Sam Sommers, thank you for walking next to me for some of the time you were here. It was always a delight, every time you appeared. ✨ Your presence in my life was a gift. I am grateful for every moment I got to spend with you. 💖🖤 Rest in peace, my friend. ❤️

My deepest condolences are to his beloved family. Sam’s relationship with his family was deep and inspiring. I can only imagine how hard it is to lose a father and spouse like that. They deserve our utmost care, support, love, and respect. 🫶💗❤️

It’s been a hard few days, harder than I predicted. 💔 Sam was one of those people that was kind of all positive, so it’s just hard. I also texted him on Tuesday evening, after he had passed away but before I knew that and that’s getting to me a bit. 😭

We needed more Sams in this world, not less. 🖤

Altogether, Sam loved social psychology and his vision for the future of our field was a beautiful one. Let’s honor Dr. Samuel R. Sommers whenever we get the opportunity to do so. 🌟🍻🤩❤️👏⭐️✨

He guided the research direction of our field as an Editor. He guided the intellectual direction of our field through his textbooks. He showed the importance of our field to people outside academia through popular books. He led his local community as the Chair of the Tufts Psychology Department.

Sam Sommers was a visionary for our field. He regularly assumed roles that gave him scholarly leadership of our field’s trajectory across domains.

Through this collaboration, I have found fulfillment and inspiration. It has also taken my writing to the next plateau, because of the generosity and brilliance of Sam’s and Neil’s feedback, in particular.

Around 2017, Tim Wilson, Elliot Aronson, and Sam reached out to me to be a possible co-author on the Aronson Social Psychology textbook, and that was when our scholarly collaboration began. Neil joined the party 4 - 5 years ago now, and it's been so synergistic.✨🎉💖

(There is definitely a lesson in here to early career scholars to not blow off the peer reviews you do! 🤓✍️)

I remembered that, at the time, he had written back to me and thanked me for a high-quality review. His note had meant a lot to me, at the time, as a new professor. However, I had no idea how much that one review would pay off for me!
