for context of how quickly these putrify, this is the one i shared yesterday. someone pulled or kicked it and just left it. those gills turned from white to inky black overnight.

just saw this Coprinus comatus a few minutes ago on my trash walk. (landscape gardener starting my morning) it's just above freezing as y'all might see by the frost. i've never seen fresh shaggy manes this late in the season.

Coprinus Comatus, commonly called the shaggy mane mushroom. an inky cap mushroom that turns into a black sludge as it matures. this one is late for the season. this was part of a fairy ring but the others didn't look so hot for a good pic.

Grace folds her arms over her stomach. she doesn't say it and there is no indication of it, but the previous squabble has left her with an upset stomach. she probably needs a decent meal again. 2 of 4 "no, not at all." little q. responds to e_'s previous question of ugliness. "i get how púcaí are. it's fine." "i wanted to show you for a while. Grace meant no harm. we love each other, now." e_ tell little q. 3 of 4 "is that true?" little q. turns to Grace. "yeah-but not like romantic love... right, e_?" Grace asks nervously realizing this was not in fact established as they were sort of busy when they declared a love for each other. "Grace," e_ says, "i love you as all friends ought to" "yeah..." Grace calms down a little, "same. love you as well, little q." "oh!" little q. is rather surprised. 4 of 4 "i guess i owe you an apology, then..." little q. smiles. Grace has snuck up behind e_, her hands raised. "'Kay, before you do, just let me say one thing-" The Fox stands behind e_'s bald head, raising her hands grinning... alt-textra: no spoilers. some of you might guess where this is going. Grace is still struggling with her identity as Ace and is not familiar with the full spectrum or where she falls on it. but give her time. there is still one and a half more chapters left in this yarn, and we haven't even hit the true climax, yet!" 😉

"Grace!" little q. retorts. 2 of 4 "e_ doesn't have to do anything they don't want to!" little q. firmly states. e_ closes their eyes and bends forward, slightly. "little q. Just. Stop!" Grace tries to retort. 3 of 4 "No! you STOP!" little q. yells, tears welling in their eyes. "i thought you were done with this!" "i am!" Grace says indignantly, "just- JUST TURN AROUND, YA ACORN!" probably not the best choice of wording. but then Grace is not quite in line with her namesake. "little q." e_ says meekly behind them. 4 of 4 "oh!" little q. sees that e_ has dropped their glamour as little q.'s own tears drop. "please..." e_ says, "it's okay. i've been scared to show you this..." "i'm sorry-" Grace says, "i wasn't trying to be a jerk." alt-textra: i debated between the reveal here or in the next chapter, but decided here is best because there's one last bigger reveal for the next chapter, not to spoil nothin' just to whet your appetite.

" asks little q., as up to this point they'd only heard e_ refer themself in the third person. 2 of 4 "oh yeah... e_ uses personal pronouns, now" they say, not using a personal pronoun. "i lost my glamour for a while and decided i didn't want to be púca anymore -but i AM púca!" little q. considers this. 3 of 4 "and worse now i'm expected to be Quing!" "Quing?" little q. repeats the word. "Queen + King. it's a work in progress" to which a thousand good suggestions may be offered, but e_ is still a bit hung up on this detail. 4 of 4 "i've never seen you without your glamour" little q. says trying to remember if there was such a time. "Oh." e_ says as if they'd not considered it a thousand times, themself. "yeah. no. i'm ugly." serious hang ups. "i seen them!" says a Texan accent off-panel. alt-textra: i guess we all have our weird hang ups. i get frustrated when certain details in drawing or music just don't come out right and have to step away from projects from time to time lest i blow a gasket. luckily i'm close enough to the end i think i'm gonna make it just fine, though there is the question of the final climax coming right up. fingers don't flail me now. 🙃

1 of 4 not quite understanding, Harvard of the Chalices says, "i don't quite understand-" "Well," Zöe says proceeding to not quite explain her elliptical parable, "Grinner's not king cuz mama blew him up" as an afterthought she adds, "bad mama!" mostly because she assumes mama made a big old mess of the king, and not for the actual deposing of the king, himself. 2 of 4 "my brother's dead??" Harvard manages to glean this much, which is an impressive amount for anyone. Zöe adds "weird that it happened twice" and i shall be leaving that unexplained because it is fun. 3 of 4 realizing Zöe is delivering some fairly dark news to the prince she comes out of her reverie adsurdum, "sorry i'm being insensitive again, aren't i?" "No, this was bound to happen..." Harvard looks away, sullen. 4 of 4 the scene shifts yet again to a very down-trodden e_ being comforted by litte q. Harvard speaks as their scene transitions with the words, "those who live by cruelty are doomed to be undone by it" alt-textra: i don't think i ever want to give a full explanation to Zöe's lucky guesses. i think each person who learns the name Tat gains some kind of unique insight. Zöe has lucky guesses, Grace gets sudden flashes of insight, Deirdre an far deeper extensive knowledge of magic from it, Aestre sees into people's hearts, and Alisha... well, now that would be a spoiler, wouldn't it? 😏

"can't say that i have" replies Harvard. 2 of 4 "Well, he's a cat/car who goes on adventures and i love him- anyway once he had to break into a castle to rescue a princess-" she rambles on, "VROOM!! CRASH!!" she demonstrates, "right through the wall!" 3 of 4 she twirls her finger in the air, "-but it turned out the princess was a plate of Lasagna, all along! just goes to show ya" and indeed, we clearly all understand. 4 of 4 "anyway i think it's pertinant to our situation" she says giving the kitty cat emoji :3 "What is lasagna?" Harvard says, asking the real questions. alt-textra: with how absent Zöe was during the last chapter, it seemed only proper to have her come back guns blazing. also if memory sevres me right, it's been quite a while since she's properly geeked out about her favorite cat/car.

"i s'pected it a'while ago, yes" Thomas replies. 2 of 4 "i won't pretend to know it all. i learnt a bit a magic, about yer past family, 'bout you'n Aestre as lovers, how you lost yer little Zöe... forgive me for snooping." Thomas puts his hand on his chest. 3 of 4 Deirdre glomps Thomas, " "forgive me!" he says! for what‽ i had wanted to tell you all that for years! "forgive ME" I should say!" "Well, then, forgiven!" Thomas replies. "it's so good to be home!" 4 of 4 "And as for Zöe," the panel shows Zöe and Prince Harvard together, "have i got the craziest story to tell you!" alt-textra: just noticed i forgot to color in Zöe's eye. alas. but that's not why we're here. actually i'm not really sure what to say about this page. i imagine Aestre fitting in quite nicely with the Rhymer family, as she has expressed love for both Thomas and Deirdre. it'll probably work out great. Thomas living in the company of fairies is probably really good for him. and the Ever-Changing Brambles is a big enough place for Thomas, Deirdre, Aestre, little q., Zöe, Quinn, e_, Alisha, and of course visitors like Grace, Addie, Mary, Alice, and Esther.

1 of 4 Aestre awakens, "Oh-" she says noticing Esther laying next to her, "hello young human" "did it work?" Esther asks. "yes?" replies Aestre, not certain. "She's awake!" Deirdre exclaims. "maybe? silver?" Aestre's color has returned, but not her flowers, but likely they will grow back on their own. 2 of 4 "yes!" Aestre now stands clasping Esther hands as the two acknowledge each other for the first time. "some of Deirdre's old magic! you know, young human, i believe your hair saved my life!" "it did?" Esther is mystified. in the foreground Thomas looks concernedly to Deirdre who shuffles and looks away. 3 of 4 after some silence Deirdre breaks the awkwardness, "Oh Thomas-" she says, "i can't imagine what you must think of me after all this time..." "well, then," Thomas says putting his hand on her other shoulder... 4 of 4 "let me show you!" Thomas kisses Deirdre on a blushing cheek. alt-textra: Deirdre had always meant to come back with Quinn, but it was her own hastiness that trapped her in Druidia as a shadow on a wall in a cave for ten years. Where Deirdre is Hasty, Thomas is very patient. where she is quick-witted, it takes Thomas some time to learn. in the end they compliment each other. and Thomas certainly has his moments of cleverness.

1 of 4 a very distraught Alice in all her glorious short red hair comes to check on an even more distraught Mary in all her glorious... Mary-ness. Addie attempts to comfort her, but Mary is a million miles away. "are you okay? Alice asks. "she might be a bit overwhelmed" Addie tells her. "Aestre" is all Mary manages. 2 of 4 "i feel kinda lost in all this, Not Gonna lie" Alice rests her face in her palms. "no, y'er fine." Mary assures her, "there's a lot to take in, here" 3 of 4 "So..." Alice starts, "Who is Aestre?" "Aestre, The Lady Herself, Queen of the Fairies, this woman is a Goddess!" and other attributes Aestre has probably heard more times than she'd care to remember. 4 of 4 "it's okay if you still feel lost" which by the way goes for the audience. ask and i shall attempt to clarify the things. "okay, good" Alice raises a finger. "it's a Natural way to feel" Addie concludes. Alt-Textra: of course dramatic irony permits long time readers the luxury of knowing that Aestre does not consider herself a Goddess. just a very old woman fighting an even older battle, as she cryptically said herself. she herself doesn't know of any Gods or Goddesses and admits so openly. this, however, does not stop others from assuming that she must be a Goddess as it would be something very Goddess-like to deny that one is a Goddess. she's just this crazy tall lady, yeah?

"warm Milk & Honey" he replies, careful not to pour too much into Aestre's mouth. 2 of 4 "Esther, i apologize, i have a kinda strange request— " Thomas calls off panel. "my stars..." Deirdre says, surprised. 3 of 4 Esther enters holding her hair. Thomas tells her "i need you to rest your hair against this woman—" "you're this sure about my hair?" she asks. "i've never been more sure about anything in my life." which is funny that this is the second time she's heard those exact words. 4 of 4 "Thomas-" says Deirdre, "these are Fae remedies- How do you know all this?" "i read your books" he smiles, kneeling, hands clasped together, perfectly proud of himself. Aestre's eyes start to open. "i do hope this helps" Esther says. alt-textra: it's no mistake i chose the names Esther and Aestre and that they look remarkably similar. but where Aestre is confident and very outward, Esther is never quite certain and always reserved. i don't think one way is better than the other. as for the call-back in the previous panel, check out "Summer's Last Hello" for context.

Mary leans forward, the bunny ears on her hoodie bobbing behind her, "i see two figures!" she says. 2 of 4 Aestre and Deirdre emerge from the portal. Deirdre holds an unconscious Aestre who is looking even more punked than before. "we're almost through, Aestre!" Deirdre yells, "Hold on!" 3 of 4 Deirdre, very surprised to see her estranged husband yells, "THOMAS!! What are you doing here‽" "Nevermind, what's wrong with Aestre?" he sayshands outstretched to help. 4 of 4 "She started fading and needed to leave, but i fear the portal may have made things worse" Deirdre explains. "'s a good thing i came prepared" replies Thomas. in this panel, Mary stares in wonder. her whole life and faith in magick and the Fae confirmed in a single name, "Aestre?" she manages to say. alt-textra: in the story "i shall go into a Hare" Mary makes it very clear her beliefs to Addie and together they form what they call The Bunny Coven. Mary has spent years being ridiculed for her quirks and fascination with cultic practices and rituals. so for her to finally see the being she has worshipped as a goddess in the flesh and at the moment so vulnerable, would be a great shock to her, but also a relief and affirmation that maybe she wasn't as crazy as everyone said. still crazy, just not as crazy.

1 of 4 new chapter, new page! this chapter is titled, "...and the Deepsleep Sea". this panel shows Randy the twelve foot Fresh Garbage Spirit performing a magic spell while muttering incantations to open a portal back the Ever-Changing Brambles. in his arms the Bean Sidhe, She Who Until Recently Combed Her Hair, struggles to escape. 2 of 4 Deirdre sides up to Aestre and declares on no uncertain terms, "i'm Going with you". "but Deirdre," says Aestre, "Zöe has not come back, yet!" 3 of 4 "don't argue!" says an undeterred Deirdre. "My children are more self-reliant than i could have ever guessed. and you are too weak to go alone!" Deirdre is of course correct as Aestre accepts this fact dejectedly. 4 of 4 "i'm not afraid for myself, but for others i worry" Aestre says, which is pretty much my own anxiety in a nut-shell. "and i'm one of those worrisome "others"- let's go!" Deirdre commands. she takes Aestre's hand and walks into the newly opened portal... alt-textra: new chapter and all that good stuff! i got a doozy of an ending in store for this one with lotsa good lil twists if'n i may brag so for a second. i really like how Deirdre's stubbornness came out in this page. ten years in a cave she's really not taking anyone's crap anymore.

i try to get a sheet out of a new bristol pad and cuz of the way it was glued the whole cover ripped off. the sheets are not that great of quality this time, either. usually strathmore is better than this. 😑
