The key is to stick to the established brands I think, so Shure, AKG, Rode, Audio-Technica are the best to look at. You know I love me a Rode microphone. Zoom also do a mic, and they're usually reliable as well.

Those machines on Stagecoach buses are terrible as well. You've got to hover your card or phone 'just so', or it doesn't take. I've seen (and experienced) drivers snatching cards and phones out of people's hands to do it themselves, which to me is a big "NO".
