Damn, these old English ballads! Kristin Hersh did a short record of appalachian tunes, & when she played her best one live she said, "They're all horrible," & she was right, because those tunes are derived from the English ballads about "Murder, Misery and then Goodnight," as she called her record.

Yet again I'm at the point where I say, the novel is finished (just about). I'm closest now. I know the paths. I know all of the ways to the end, clear.
