Let’s say this happens: do you think Trump’s spat with Leonard Leo/FS is significant enough that they won’t get their preferred pick? Would a pure Trump loyalist get enough Republicans at this point? I’m skeptical.

Love it! A little pettiness never hurt anyone that isn’t going to the private island of a child predator and then lying about it to make himself look like a white knight. The famous alums from my high school, @anamariecox.bsky.social and World Series legend Alex Gordon would never!

At that level, money is a way of keeping score and a way to enforce power over others. They don't hang out with the others so there's little social cost to them.
Having kids who are hostages to fate (and to that of the societies they live in) might affect some, but Musk is a counterexample.

Yes, in the same way that drinking 4-6 beers per week makes for a better life than drinking a liter of vodka per day. Clearly true, but good luck convincing an addict

These people are soulless narcissistic sociopaths. Their worldview is grotesque and repellent, which is why it's so incomprehensible to the rest of us.

Just a thought: wouldn’t it make for just a lot better life to have, say, $100 million dollars in a stable, well-functioning society where people have a generally positive view about you than $100 billion in a world where institutions are falling and everyone hates your guts? I don’t get it.
