Being in the PNW and a history buff, I really had to be careful how I positioned settling being done to not rub up against pain points. There could be no religious or societal mandates put on the settling. They had to be running from something, not relocating. And their homeland had to be blighted.

I recently tackled this thought with a campaign setting I was building and I think how much it feels like you’re bleaching “manifest destiny” depends on how aware you are of what that entailed, and how obvious its effects are where you live.
