Brilliant to see the winners of the HSE Climate and Sustainability Recognition Awards featured in the @hselive.bsky.social Health Matters.

Some inspirational people and projects! Upwards and forwards in 2026!!!

📍 Oslo

Notice the number of simple zebra crossings. No lights, no fancy infrastructure, just clear priority for pedestrians.

The result? Slower cars, calmer streets, and a city that feels safer and less dominated by traffic.

We desperately need this in Dublin / Ireland!

My letter to the editor in the Irish Times on Thursday the 18th of December.

When we build our entire society around cars and treat them as kings, nobody wins.

The ‘cycle paths’ around Dublin Airport might be the most tokenistic, greenwashed infrastructure I’ve ever seen... and that says a lot!
November 30, 2025 at 6:27 PM
An Garda Síochána continue to place the main responsibility for road safety on vulnerable road users.

People daring to cycle are not the problem in Ireland. Cars and the people driving them are — or more importantly, speed, dangerous driving, and the almost complete lack of enforcement.

Why are they posing for this? 🙄

A small section of a tram line reopening after an incident doesn’t warrant a photoshoot with the Minister for Transport and the Lord Mayor.

Tesco and Aer Lingus have launched a scheme that turns everyday shopping into “unforgettable travel.” Doing this in the middle of a climate crisis is absolute madness!

It’s time to ban fossil-fuel companies, including airlines, from advertising and shaping our choices in this way.

Most Irish politicians ignore the massive costs of our car-centric transport system, doubling down on cars as a 'win' for society. We all pay for this.

Meanwhile, investment in active travel keeps shrinking, and the rollout of the little infrastructure we do get crawls along at a snail’s pace.

Freshly laid tarmac, freshly painted death lane.

How is this an acceptable standard in 2025 @dubcitycouncil.bsky.social? Paint ≠ infrastructure.

We deserve wide, fully protected cycle lanes that support a healthier, safer, more sustainable city.

This simply isn’t good enough.

Interesting look at mode share across 800 cities worldwide. City size and income tell you a lot about how people get around. And, well… Dublin doesn’t come out looking great. Not exactly a stronghold of public or active transport.

Brilliant conversation in Books Upstairs this afternoon between the always-inspirational @thinkorswim.bsky.social and @whittledaway.bsky.social on John's new book The Lie of the Land.

It was packed with stark facts, sobering analysis, and even a bit of hope!

Inspiring day at the National Climate March organised by
@foeireland.bsky.social, marching with @irishdocsenv.bsky.social, calling on the Irish Government to deliver a just climate-action policy and to end fossil-fuel power.

Showing up. Speaking up. It makes a difference.

Let’s keep at it!

"Upgrading" a cycle path should NOT mean endangering cyclists.

Where are we supposed to go here, Dublin City Council?
Into oncoming traffic? Onto the footpath?

If you’re redoing a cycle path, you must provide a safe alternative while the work’s underway.

This is bad even by your standards.

Funny how the climate part didn’t make it into their original graphic.
November 10, 2025 at 2:39 PM
Ryanair’s latest “look how much we’re flying” graphic leaves out a pretty important detail: their emissions and consequent harm to human health.

Pretty important as they're one of Europe's most polluting companies, but not to worry, I fixed it.

Dublin has all the ingredients to be a world-class cycling city, but we need a real shift in thinking, ambition, and action.

We need to move from talking the talk to walking (and cycling) the walk.

Because as is, this is what it feels like to cycle in Dublin 👎

Doing something isn’t success. Active-travel infrastructure needs to be safe, wide, and usable — not squeezed beside a canal because nobody will take space from cars.

Not comparing like for like, but rather the approach to city planning (or complete lack of).

Pearse street is a cluster f**k of everything but sustainable heath promoting infrastructure.

Loving the 'new' (temporary) cycle tracks btw.

Which one drains public money, fuels inactivity and sedentary lifestyles, pollutes the air, harms our health, and leaves people in debt?
November 2, 2025 at 12:39 PM
There are major issues with the current toll setup, but remember this: when you consider the true cost of our car-centric transport system, driving stays artificially cheap — and a road is never “paid off.” Even once the financial cost is covered, the ongoing health and environmental harms continue.
October 30, 2025 at 8:27 AM
Sorry for the inconvenience.

My letter to the editor this morning is about how we should use the lessons from events like the Dublin Marathon to make Dublin a healthier, greener, and more people-friendly city, not just every blue moon, but on a permanent basis.

📍 Grand Canal Street Lower.

A hostile street space with zero ambition — dull, grey, and joyless.

Where’s the pride in our city’s public realm? We can and must do better.

We need to #ReimagineDublin.

You might look at this and think, “Oh nice, a new cycle lane!”
But… 500m of pretty average cycle lane that will take 5 months⁉️to build is not great....

And to top it off, the lane doesn’t even connect to anything. No cycle lanes at either end.

We need meaningful networks, not token gestures!
October 20, 2025 at 11:14 AM
Forgive me if I’m wrong, but isn’t international best practice not to mix pedestrians and cyclists at crossings?
October 12, 2025 at 8:21 PM
Meet TAPA — my vision for the fully integrated transport app Dublin should already have.

Dublin may not have the world’s best transport system (yet), but we can absolutely build a world-class transport app.

Would you use TAPA?
