“Oversight” would be a great title for a critique of Lonergan

All this is to say that I think the thematic issues around labor, the dignity of work and workers, the tensions between individualism and collectivism - these are all still real and present. They didn't end in 1991. Maybe a new Leo papacy means a return to RN anniversaries.

At the time I predicted it would be in the Populorum Progressio line, or would not be tied to previous specific texts (similar to Pacem in Terris (1963) or Laudato Si (2015)), but had fairly low confidence in this.

It's also possible that next year, on what would be the 135th anniversary, Leo XIV does an encyclical in that line. I've said before I think an AI/CST encyclical is coming from him during the first year of his pontificate.

JPII didn't do another Rerum Novarum anniversary in 2001, B16 didn't do one in 2011, and Francis didn't do one in 2021. One can maybe squint super hard at Fratelli Tutti (2020) and try to wrench it into the line, but I think that's a really hard case to make.

There's a bit of a triumphal tone in Centesimus Annus, coming out during the collapse of the Eastern Bloc and the Soviet Union. I think there was optimism that communism/socialism were done for at that point. But there wasn't a pivot to further critiques of the excesses of capitalism/individualism

My best guess is that while this series of texts was always critical of both laissez-faire capitalism/individualism and socialism/collectivism, I think in most cases socialism was perceived as the bigger threat.

The previous anniversaries were:
Quadragesimo Anno (1931)
Mater et Magistra (1961)
Octogesima Adveniens (1971)*
Laborem Exercens (1981)
Centesimus Annus (1991)

But none since then.

* An apostolic letter, not an encyclical, but still

Do you like Maroon 5? Their early work was a little too pop-soul for my taste, but when V came out in 2014, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a bi

For me it’s about my birthday present, which is coming up in a couple weeks. My mom will ask what I want, I’ll give a list of several things, and then she’ll give me a Home Depot gift card
