4/5 At COP24 in Cairo, OceanCare and BC3 will present our reports findings and call for stronger regional climate–ocean action. Because protecting the climate means protecting the ocean – and that requires all of us.

The science is clear. The tools exist. Now we need ambitious action. ✊💙

3/5 At current emission rates, the region’s #carbonbudget will be exhausted by 2035, beyond even the 2°C threshold of the #ParisAgreement. But there is still a way forward. If Mediterranean countries work together & cut emissions by around 6% per year from 2030, staying within 2°C is still possible.

2/5 To show just how serious the situation is, OceanCare commissioned the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) to develop a methodology to define the region's Remaining Carbon Budget and how it could become allocated to Range States. The findings are stark 👇

From 2–5 December, all 21 Mediterranean countries and the #EU, are meeting in Cairo for the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the #Mediterranean (COP24, also known as #BarcelonaConvention). This is a crucial moment for the region’s climate future.

The Mediterranean's carbon budget will be exhausted by 2035 at current emission rates.

Next week at #COP24 of the #BarcelonaConvention in Cairo, OceanCare & BC3 will present our report showing why urgent action is needed.

🐋 #ACCOBAMS has a mechanism in place that allows review of whether countries are properly implementing conservation action or not. OceanCare recently submitted a complaint to #Spain for failing to update the protection status of fin & sperm whales in its National Registry.

The 9th Meeting of the Parties to #ACCOBAMS – the Agreement to protect whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean and Black Seas – has ended last week in Limassol, Cyprus. At some issues, we're leaving, with tangible progress to build on. 🙌🐬🐋

Watch here our recap. 📷

2/3 The focus: 2 high-risk collision areas where whales & ships cross paths with fatal consequences – the NW Mediterranean & Greece's Hellenic Trench. 🐋 The event showed progress that has been made, but also made clear: significant hurdles remain.

Ship strikes are the biggest threat to fin & sperm whales in the #Mediterranean. But solutions exist – if we act now.
This week at the 9th Meeting of #ACCOBAMS, OceanCare & Tethys Research Institute co-hosted a side event bringing together experts & decision-makers to address this threat. 1/3

3/3 #OceanCare will advocate for:
🐋 Stronger measures to reduce #shipstrike risks in the Mediterranean
🔊 Effective mitigation of underwater noise from shipping, seismic surveys & military activities.
🎣 Intensify efforts to address bycatch & reduce carbon footprint of destructive fisheries
November 18, 2025 at 1:36 PM
2/3 Ship strikes, underwater noise, marine debris, entanglement in fishing gear are some of the mounting threats for whales & dolphins in this region. #ClimateChange is impacting on the wider habitat, while the Black Sea is a warfare zone with activities even expanding into the Mediterranean.

OceanCare advocating for stronger protection at conference in Cyprus 🇨🇾 🌊

This week, OceanCare will be on the ground in Limassol for the 9th #ACCOBAMS Meeting of the Parties – where 24 parties work together to protect whales and dolphins in the Black Sea, #Mediterranean and contiguous Atlantic. 1/3

5/5 The #Mediterranean shows us what's at stake, as it has already crossed the 1.5°C warming threshold. We cannot preserve the Ocean as an ally while continuing the activities that undermine it.

4/5 ⛴️ Bottom trawling releases centuries-old carbon from marine sediments – one of our most important long-term carbon stores – while being among the least fuel-efficient fishing methods. Each activity damages the Ocean's ability to regulate the climate while accelerating global warming.

3/5 🚢 Shipping emits vast amounts of CO2 – yet reducing vessel speed could significantly cut emissions, fuel consumption, collision risks with marine life, and underwater noise.

2/5 ⚠️ Offshore oil and gas exploration contributes disproportionately to climate change while causing ocean destruction through noise pollution.

🌊 At COP30, it's time to address how human activities in the Ocean are fueling both the climate and ocean crisis:

🌊 Climate Protection IS Ocean Protection – and vice versa.
As world leaders gather for #COP30 in Belém, Brasil, the Ocean remains critically undervalued. Yet without a healthy ocean, there is no climate solution. 1/4

2/3 It shows that at every stage, pilot whales suffer profoundly. The welfare impacts are severe: anxiety, breathlessness, confusion, fear, panic, pain, helplessness. #pilotwhales are sentient, intelligent beings. They never abandon each other, forced to witness their loved ones' slaughter.

The 20th meeting of the London Protocol just concluded, where #marinegeoengineering took stage in discussions about ocean governance. Current marine geoengineering proposals raise major concerns & none are ready for deployment. The precautionary approach remains paramount. 1/2

🌊 40 countries officially take a stand against deep-sea mining!Antigua & Barbuda & Romania have recently joined the call. The message is clear: The deep sea is not a resource to be exploited.
It's a vital part of our planet that needs protection.

3/3 The solution? Mediterranean countries must cut CO2 emissions by an average of 6% per year starting in 2030 to still achieve the 2°C target of the Paris Agreement.
The numbers are clear. The time to act is now.

2/3 Our new report reveals the dramatic situation in the Mediterranean region:

🔹 The region has already "spent" its 1.5°C budget
🔹 At current emission rates, the remaining carbon budget is exhausted by 2035.
🔹 We're spending faster than we can afford
October 20, 2025 at 3:01 PM
What is a carbon budget? 🤔

Think of it like a bank account – but for #CO2 emissions. Scientists have calculated how much CO2 we can still emit, or 'spend', before exceeding the Paris Agreement targets.
