Remaining Carbon Budget Mediterranean – OceanCare 2025
The report from the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) for OceanCare shows urgent action is needed to stay within the Mediterranean’s carbon budget.

4/5 At COP24 in Cairo, OceanCare and BC3 will present our reports findings and call for stronger regional climate–ocean action. Because protecting the climate means protecting the ocean – and that requires all of us.

The science is clear. The tools exist. Now we need ambitious action. ✊💙
November 29, 2025 at 10:46 AM
3/5 At current emission rates, the region’s #carbonbudget will be exhausted by 2035, beyond even the 2°C threshold of the #ParisAgreement. But there is still a way forward. If Mediterranean countries work together & cut emissions by around 6% per year from 2030, staying within 2°C is still possible.
November 29, 2025 at 10:46 AM
2/5 To show just how serious the situation is, OceanCare commissioned the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) to develop a methodology to define the region's Remaining Carbon Budget and how it could become allocated to Range States. The findings are stark 👇
November 29, 2025 at 10:46 AM
2/2 👉 If you're attending #COP24, we'd be glad to see you there. Dr. María Victoria Román (BC3) will present the findings of the report, followed by a roundtable exploring paths for addressing the climate crisis in context to ocean conservation.

Carbon Budget of Mediterranean soon Exceeded - OceanCare
New report on the Mediterranean carbon budget by BC3, commissioned by OceanCare, shows: an annual CO₂ reduction of 6% is necessary.

3/3 🚢 Speed reduction and rerouting vessels away from key whale habitats are proven solutions – yet implementation is challenging. If we overcome these obstacles, the #Mediterranean could become a shining example and role model for other regions.

ACCOBAMS: Protecting Whales from Ship Strikes - OceanCare
Whales in the Med Sea face deadly ship strikes. At the ACCOBAMS Meeting, OceanCare and Tethys called for action in high-risk areas.

2/3 The focus: 2 high-risk collision areas where whales & ships cross paths with fatal consequences – the NW Mediterranean & Greece's Hellenic Trench. 🐋 The event showed progress that has been made, but also made clear: significant hurdles remain.

3/3 #OceanCare will advocate for:
🐋 Stronger measures to reduce #shipstrike risks in the Mediterranean
🔊 Effective mitigation of underwater noise from shipping, seismic surveys & military activities.
🎣 Intensify efforts to address bycatch & reduce carbon footprint of destructive fisheries
November 18, 2025 at 1:36 PM
2/3 Ship strikes, underwater noise, marine debris, entanglement in fishing gear are some of the mounting threats for whales & dolphins in this region. #ClimateChange is impacting on the wider habitat, while the Black Sea is a warfare zone with activities even expanding into the Mediterranean.
November 18, 2025 at 1:36 PM
5/5 The #Mediterranean shows us what's at stake, as it has already crossed the 1.5°C warming threshold. We cannot preserve the Ocean as an ally while continuing the activities that undermine it.

4/5 ⛴️ Bottom trawling releases centuries-old carbon from marine sediments – one of our most important long-term carbon stores – while being among the least fuel-efficient fishing methods. Each activity damages the Ocean's ability to regulate the climate while accelerating global warming.
November 14, 2025 at 12:40 PM
3/5 🚢 Shipping emits vast amounts of CO2 – yet reducing vessel speed could significantly cut emissions, fuel consumption, collision risks with marine life, and underwater noise.
November 14, 2025 at 12:40 PM
2/5 ⚠️ Offshore oil and gas exploration contributes disproportionately to climate change while causing ocean destruction through noise pollution.
November 14, 2025 at 12:40 PM
4/4 The time for half-measures is over. At #COP30, we urge world leaders to recognise what science has long shown: climate protection and ocean protection are inseparable.

Carbon Budget of Mediterranean soon Exceeded - OceanCare
New report on the Mediterranean carbon budget by BC3, commissioned by OceanCare, shows: an annual CO₂ reduction of 6% is necessary.

3/4 Our new study reveals: at current emission rates, the Mediterranean's remaining #carbonbudget will be exhausted by 2035. The consequences are already visible. But there's hope. If Mediterranean countries cut emissions by ~6% annually from 2030, the 2°C Paris Agreement limit remains achievable.
November 12, 2025 at 4:00 PM
2/4 The Ocean has already absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases – acting as our planet's climate regulator. But that regulator is reaching its limits – and the #Mediterranean shows us what happens when we ignore this.
November 12, 2025 at 4:00 PM
3/3 The severe welfare impacts documented at every stage are undeniable. This has to end.
