I’ve spent years failing to produce a blog post length text on structured programming, so here’s a quick gloss:

Structured programming is the basis of all our programming practice, and everyone has complete misapprehensions about what it means in ways that don’t hold up to 10 seconds of scrutiny.
Anyway just thought of this because I saw a post saying you shouldn't use continue. We will continue to superficially misunderstand the point of "structured programming" until the end of time.

This is also why “colored functions” arguments are retrograde in the same way as defenses of GOTO: it is useful for the language to distinguish functions which synchronize from those which don’t. async markers are an advancement toward a better analysis of program structure.
This means in a program using GOTO, the program reader is responsible for reconstructing the structure of the program in their head; is this GOTO a conditional, an iteration, a subroutine, a raised exception? We introduced differentiated control flow so that you can tell what the jump is there for.

I stumbled across this essay as I was falling asleep last night, and left myself multiple emphatic reminders to remember to circle back to it today.

The Software Engineering Identity Crisis - Annie Vella
Many of us became software engineers because we found our identity in building things. Not managing things. Not overseeing things. Building things. With our own hands, our own minds, our own code. But...

I will take this opportunity to plump my favorite software interviewing process, which is:

1) give them a take home piece, and an hour or so to work on it

2) but the real "interview" is not the code you sent in, it's the conversational code review you have later with two of your prospective peers.
(I personally talked with this person and know them well)

This company hired full remote without issue for years: this is the first proper shocker they have.

They are changing their process, of course. In-person interviews, in-part likely to be unavoidable.
