(Excerpt from The Unlinked Prince, by O. A. Bhatti) LITTLE OVER A week later, Kabir sped on his motorbike past the outskirts of the empire-protectorate of Chamsagia. The journey had been tough, with frequent small beast attacks and three Massive beast attacks. Early on, Kabir had almost been eaten by a white-spot-ted cheethour in the snowy mountains just west of Lion City. Though he was an experienced hunter, and although he'd always wanted one of those huge spiral horns for him-self, he was also not suicidal, so he ran. It was never a good idea to take on a Behemoth-Class beast on your own without a plan. Most Behe-moth-Class beasts were over ten times the size of a person, so even if you had a plan, it would have to be a damn good one. The sun had already set by the time he'd seen the rock formations and buildings of the (Continuation of excerpt from The Unlinked Prince, by O. A. Bhatti) city-state on the horizon. Chamsagia faded behind him as he rode across the mountainous landscape. The land in this realm had been largely dry, thus far, with patches of short green grass and reddish-black sand forming the bulk of his surroundings. As he drove towards the lush green forest ahead, the grass and greenery became more plentiful.

#SFFChat Q4: I feel that action scenes are great exercises in 3rd person limited PoV, so here’s a sample!
Today's reading goal achieved Zainab patted his back in confirmation and readied her mace. Kabir shaped his multitool into a massive curved sword with a wide blade and rested it on his shoulder. He weaved the motorbike in and out of the trees, and together he and Zainab became a well-tuned machine of death, slaying beasts left and right. Kabir modulated his speed and changed directions again and again, sighting new targets and avoiding hitting other hunters in the melee. Zainab pointed her weapon towards the siran menacing their colleagues across the street. Kabir pivoted the bike to intercept the creature and sidled up next to its slithering, scaly trunk. He then willed the blunt side of his sindform blade to become edged, and stabbed into the creature's flesh as he pulled the brakes, allowing the siran to do the cutting for him. The sword dragged through the creature, prompting a pained cry. It whipped its tail, knocking the motorbike aside with them still on it. Kabir hit the ground shoulder-first, but quickly recovered. 'he siran circled around and reared to it bled from the greve suan Si 216 4:36 B © 254 2 pages left in chapter Si Central Station. The creature whipped its tail around to slam a group of hunters aside. It reared its reptilian-feline muzzle back in an earth-shattering roar. Nearby, a slithering siran, whose length was that of a tree's height, evaded a group of hunters trying to pin it down. There was no time to figure out how such a large concentration of beasts had gotten through. They drove towards the perimeter, where a line of hunters stood guard to contain the chaos. One of them was blocking the road and barking orders. The wide-shouldered man was the twins' older brother, Abdul. When they approached, Abdul gave a nod and stepped out of the road. Normally one for extended verbosity, their brother instead simply signaled for them to advance. Apparently, he didn't think they needed elaborate instructions. Kabir nodded back, and once past the perimeter, he gunned the bike forward. "Cavalry! You go right, I'll go left!" he yelled to Zainab over the engine. 215 of 669

Excerpt from The Unlinked Prince, by O. A. Bhatti: Kabir pushed these questions aside for the moment to discern references to the house's owner. Eventually, he heard a voice boom, "Great party Francis! Your kid show up yet?" "Eyy Bill! Not yet. You know how the kids are. Gotta get their hair just right. Hah!" Francis had a deep, but somewhat nasally, voice. In the ensuing conversations, referenced his "kid" many times, talk- ing about how proud he was of his success, how hard it was for them when his mother passed, how much of a patriot he'd become. But he never mentioned this "kid" by name. After little over ten minutes, someone else spoke to Francis. Kabir couldn't make out what Excerpt from The Unlinked Prince, by O. A. Bhatti (continued): was said, but the party quieted down at Fran-cis' response. "What? The fuck you mean he ain't com-ing?! You went to the old man's house, right? Was he there?" The messenger's next words came loud and clear. "He was there, boss. He, ah... just didn't want to come." "Well, did he say why? This whole shebang is in his honor," Francis replied with a mirthless laugh. "I, ah... can we talk in private?" "What'd he say?! Tell me." The next words were inaudible, but Kabir got the impression the messenger was whisper-ing. For a moment after, there was nothing but dead silence. Then Francis broke that silence. "That. Little. SHIT!" He yelled. There was a crash that sounded like dinnerware shattering. "Gets home days ago, doesn't say shit. I gotta hear about it from the old man. And now he stands me up?! Tells ME to go fuck MYSELF?! Fuck that! Bring the car around! See him say that shit to my face!" "Boss, that's not—" "I said bring the fucking car around!"

"T've talked to Zainab, but did I ever tell you why I abdicated?" Kabir shook his head. "I'd assumed you just wanted a new start after you transitioned." She smiled. "That was a period filled with lots of changes. But that wasn't it. It was Dad." "Something he said?" Bushra shook her head. "Something he did. You and Zainab went off to train for the Corps, so he and Mum finally had the house to them-selves. But instead of taking the time to enjoy a peaceful retirement, he re-enlisted. I thought Mum would resent that, but she was happy with it. When I realized why, I also realized that I didn't want the responsibility anymore. Even though Mum would have rather had him at home, not gone for weeks at a time, even though she wanted him to stay safe, she understood his decision. An Excerpt from the yet-to-be-released novel, Veilrender, by O. A. Bhatti: Through the haze of smoke, Alia saw Bobby seated on the floor next to the door he’d been dragged through, which was tied shut with another fleshy cord. He was sitting on a patchwork blanket with a frozen expression of terror on his face. Bobby was staring up at a figure shrouded by smoke. Alia tried the door again, and it still wouldn’t budge. She started kicking the door. After the fourth kick, the doorjamb splintered, and the door swung open. “—taking the lord’s name in vain?! Cursing?! You’re going to stay there until you learn your lesson, you hear?!” a hoarse, spiteful voice rasped. Alia stepped into the room, rifle ready. The figure was a woman holding a short wooden stick in one hand and a large kitchen knife in the other. Alia the woman as Abby Guddle, the matriarch of the family. She was a fair white woman with curly brown hair down past her shoulders. She was shorter than Alia and wore a soot-stained blue dress with long sleeves. Her skin had taken on a pallid shade, and long fleshy cords attached at various places on the back of her neck. As Alia slowly made her way towards the pair, she saw that the cords stretched out from the bottom of the woman’s skirt. One cord was wrapped around Bobby’s throat and attached to his neck at the end, like a suction cup or a leech. The cord writhed and pulsed. When she saw Alia enter, Abby’s face contorted into an indignant rage. She turned to her son, who looked at Alia with pleading eyes. “And you bring some hussy into my home? Oh, you’re in for it when your father finds out, buster!” She turned to Alia and pointed the long knife at her. “You leave, dirty girl, you’re not wanted here!”

Continuation of excerpt from The Unlinked Prince. As though Kabir shouted the question into his ear, Ustaad Sayfudeen snapped out of his trance and gasped for air like he’d come up from water. He removed his hand from the tablet and covered his eyes. Then he threw the charcoal he’d been using in a huff. It clattered away on the stone floor. After another beat, Sayfudeen finally noticed the group, turning and fixing them with surprised, feral eyes. His wild gaze rested on Kabir, and he rose to face the prince. Even though they had the upper hand, Kabir took a step back as the cleric jabbed a finger towards him. The yellow jewel on Sayfudeen’s ring gleamed brightly, despite the lack of illumination in the room. “You! You… interloper! Infidel cur! Why should it be you? Why did He… it’s not fair! We’ve been waiting so long! It’s not fair, it’s not fair, it’s not fair—” Ustaad Sayfudeen kept screaming this as he leapt towards Kabir and tackled him to the floor. Kabir now had no problem believing the cleric was as well-trained as he’d said. Janine tried grabbing him into a chokehold, but he put a hand between her arm and his throat, and the maneuver only served to hold him back. “Fucking help!” Janine yelled to Kamran, who gawked at the struggle with wide, uncertain eyes.

Got a fun one here which also showcases some of the magic involved in the world of The Unlinked Prince.
Excerpt from The Unlinked Prince: The cleric seemed lost in a trance, his gaze fixed on the wall in front of him. In his left hand he gripped a stone “Book,” and with his right he sketched wildly on a large sheet of paper using charcoal. This stopped Kabir in his tracks. If the cleric was seeing visions like his own, if he was seeing clues to the thing Kabir had forgotten… He needed to see what Sayfudeen was drawing. Janine came up behind Ustaad Sayfudeen and cleared her throat. When the man didn’t react, she stood next to him and waved a hand in front of his eyes. But this didn’t stop him from drawing. Kabir approached the entranced cleric. The desk was strewn with photo-realistic charcoal drawings. But these weren’t eldritch horrors, as Kabir had expected, but images of people, places, and other mundane things. He saw a picture of Lion City from north of the Wall, though the city was depicted without the large buildings visible from the outside. There was a picture of the Imperial Palace. There were pictures of hunters emblazoned with the sigil of the Empire, three undulating lines set upon a twelve-sided dodecagon. But their equipment looked archaic. Instead of capture-balls, vapor-boots, and morphing weapons, each of the hunters wore tree-climbing hooks affixed to their boots and bracers. One drawing depicted a group of hunters hooked onto individual trees, holding a massive net between them. The display harkened to a time before the advent of sindform technology, at least as it related to the Corps. But it was the drawing that Ustaad Sayfudeen worked on now that drew Kabir’s full attention. It was a portrait of a woman’s face. Was that… his mother? No, it was his grandmother, the late Empress, who’d passed centuries ago. But the likeness to old pictures of her was uncanny. Why was Sayfudeen drawing her? Continued in follow-up post

I'm particularly fond of including sensory details in my work for moments I want to linger. In The Unlinked Prince, that mostly means detailed and appetizing descriptions of food. Damn, I forgot to put "do not read on an empty stomach" in my trigger warning/disclaimer...
An excerpt from The Unlinked Prince, by O. A. Bhatti: Zainab continued to read as her brother dug into the meal she’d prepared for him. Kabir ri!ed through the paper bag and opened the biggest container she’d brought. The container was "lled with a sizable portion of basmati rice drenched in thick haleem, yellow with turmeric, with strands of dark meat snaking through the lentils. It was a simple meal, not too spicy, so as to not upset his stomach, and hearty enough to aid in his recovery. It was also "lled to the fucking brim with glorious, savory !avor. “My compliments to the chef!” he exclaimed, spitting a few grains of yellowed rice onto the kitchen table.

Excerpt from The Unlinked Prince: He approached the cage-pod and inspected the detainee. The big man eyed him with naked fear. “I didn’t know he was going to shoot you! How are you up and walking around? You blessed or something?” Kabir raised an eyebrow. “Not from around here, are you?” The man looked down. “I’m not saying anything.” “Sir, you committed aggravated assault in broad daylight. Against three citizens, two of which are public servants. That type of thing doesn’t happen often in Lion City. Your sentence will be steep. But you can alleviate that somewhat if you cooperate with us.” “Alleviate? What’s that mean?” “You can make your sentence less severe if you help us understand what happened. What is happening.” The man seemed to consider it. Kabir decided to show him what lay in store if he didn’t take the offer. “Officer…” “Esposito.” “Esposito, you’re Linked, correct? Could you please Interface and access the sentencing trends and guidelines for aggravated assault?” Officer Esposito’s eyes glowed with red light, prompting a look of genuine shock from the detainee. Clearly not from around here. “By itself, aggravated assault typically carries a maximum sentence of four months of service in the Hunter Corps, or six months of imprisonment. This sentence can be increased if there is evidence of intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, if grievous bodily harm is actually inflicted in the attack, or if there’s evidence of intent to commit murder. And as with all crimes major and minor, all sentences could be commuted if the offender were to accept the Link, though mandatory supervision or placement in other communities may be necessary in cases involving violence or severe harm of other kinds.” “Thank you, officer. Since it appears there’s no evidence of intent to commit grievous bodily harm or murder, I can easily shave that down to one month on the Hunt, or a month and a half of imprisonment.” The man eyed Kabir suspiciously. “What about that Link thing?

Excerpt from The Unlinked Prince continued from above: The process was painstakingly slow, but Fawad held his hand steady as he worked, an artist drawing new lines of light. He made only one mistake, an imperfect thread that was easily snipped away so he could lay the line again. When he’d finished, Fawad lifted the shirt to the lamplight and turned it around. The grid lining the fabric looked perfect to Kabir’s eyes, but Fawad flipped the shirt over to work on the back. Whatever imperfection he saw was something the latticer at Central Station had missed. He lifted the shirt again, then nodded in satisfaction. Fawad placed it back on the table, then drew a new line of light, one that suspended in midair, reaching from the shirt’s lattice to a terminal attached to the cart. The terminal’s touchscreen lit up, and he scrolled through a page of code in a programing language that Kabir didn’t understand. “What are the functions of the shirt?” Fawad asked. “Thickening and loosening of fabric strands for temperature control, puncture resistance, impact resistance, and diffusion of kinetic energy.” “Mm. Looks like everything’s as intended. You should try it on just to be sure.” He pointed Kabir to the curtained changing room next to the one containing the cot.

An Excerpt from The Unlinked Prince by O. A. Bhatti: The tailor took them to a large square work-table covered in measurement rules and gridlines. He gestured for Kabir to take a seat as he carted over a heavy lamp on wheels. After orienting the coned head to face the table, he turned on the lamp and began examining the articles under its ruby light. The lamp revealed the shimmering beams of lattice-work embedded in the shirt, a grid composed of threads of light. Kabir saw the damaged threads on the front of the shirt clear as day, as they were frayed and jagged. “You took some heavy hits, detective. But this is salvageable.” “What about the rest?” Fawad examined the hat, jacket, slacks, and shoes. “All intact. This is good. These inter-locking pieces are trickier to repair than regular lattice-work. Lots of testing and adjustments to get each piece to work together like they’re supposed to. Just the under-armor needs the repair.” “Great. How much?” Fawad waved a hand dismissively and shook his head. “No charge. This damage happened because of my foolishness. Consider this partial repayment for the service you’ve done for me and my family.” Kabir smiled and shrugged. “Just doing my duty, sir. But if you insist.” It was a pleasure to watch Fawad work. Using a thosnur stylus, a pen-shaped instrument with a ruby-red tip, he first evened out the frayed connections, using the capacitor at the end to grab the beams and drag them into place one-by-one. He snipped those that were too damaged with a pair of tiny red-bladed scissors. Then, after a brief interruption to help a customer in the shop, he used the stylus to repair the lattice by laying new lines of thosnur to bridge the gaps... (will continue in the following post)

An excerpt from The Unlinked Prince, by O. A. Bhatti.: Kabir heard a grunt and looked up. Fatima Al-Hazred Amma-Laiyla, Empress of the Stellar River Empire, leaned over the wall surrounding the roof of her home, inspecting her youngest son like a bird of prey. “You going to just stand there and gawk? Or are you coming in?” she asked. “These gardens are new.” She snorted. “As of two years ago. Have you eaten?” He nodded, and Fatima stood to her full height. She wore a plain blue shalwar kameez, with her long dark hair loose over her shoulders. The only piece of ornamentation she wore was her sindform multitool, as a large, shining bronze bracelet on her wrist. “Well, then we’ll have a cup of tea. Come on.” Kabir entered the gate and crossed the courtyard to the house. Not much had changed inside, but his mother had never been one for ornate decoration. He spared the barest glimpse at the family photos adorning the walls. His mother met him in the kitchen, having already started the kettle. She laid out a small plate of cake rusks: thick, rectangular biscuits bursting with sweetness. Then she gave him a brisk hug and a peck on the cheek before sitting at the small kitchen table along the wall. Kabir took the opposite seat and removed his hat. They sat there through a few moments of silence, which his mother was the first to break. “I’d ask how work is going, but Abdul’s told me you’ve been through quite the shitshow. How are you feeling?” “Good.” Fatima snorted. “‘Good,’” she mocked. “You’re always ‘good.’” Kabir rolled his eyes. “Well, I’m better now. Got dinged up a bit before the breach. Then during the breach. The Nightmare didn’t exactly make things easy, either.” “You took yesterday off?” “Yes.” Her eyes shimmered red. “Hmm, checks out.” Fatima got to her feet just as the kettle whined. She poured the rich brown tea into the cups on the table. Kabir took up a rusk and dipped it in his. They shared a few more moments of awkward silence as they ate.

Hiya! I’m Osama A. Bhatti, author of the recently released Unlinked Prince. Currently editing a horror novel (Veilrender) about a group of nerd friends running afoul a repressive fundamentalist cult (felt apropos going into this year). First line that popped into my head:
An excerpt from the yet-to-be released horror novel, Veilrender: Cheryl still had the shotgun trained on the robed Jesus, but her hands trembled and she didn’t fire. The man wore a menacing smile and stood ready to pounce with his metal spikes. But when he glimpsed Alia glaring at him, and what she’d done to his compatriots, his eyes widened. He turned to flee, but was met by a very surprised Grey. “Oh shit! It’s Jesus!” Grey exclaimed. The robed Jesus ran towards Grey with his spikes raised, only for Grey to run him through with a curved cutlass. Alia noted that this sword was considerably different from the one she’d seen him holding just minutes ago. Grey slid the sword out of the Jesus, who slunk to the floor. “Three distinct Jesuses! Jesusi? A flock of Jesusi!” He exclaimed. Grey pointed to Josh, the blonde Jesus. “Is he the leader?” Alia shrugged. “No one left to contradict him on that now.”

Excerpt from The Unlinked Prince, by O. A. Bhatti: "Lost again, Kabir found himself in an empty house. The floorboards beneath creaked as he sat up to take stock of his surroundings. There was barely any light, not even enough to see what was right in front of him. How did Kabir know it was a house then? A creak sounded from behind. Kabir bolted to his feet and ran up the stairs. Don’t turn around. Down the hall, he found a door. He knew this place. He’d been here before. Kabir had prepared for this. He wasn’t afraid to face it, but he didn’t have his weapons and he couldn’t see. He was not afraid. He was not. Kabir heard a noise in the dark and ducked into a room. There he heard a whispered voice, the murmur of a still beating heart. It was a child, in a pair of yellow pajamas. They sat with their knees to their chest, weeping next to a patch of pried-out floorboards. The ground underneath had been dug up. A tiny grave, with the rest of them all inside.
