Passed the tree-lighting event in my town. Whole street was backed up all the way to the busy man street, not just because of traffic, but because some dude (assuming it’s a dude, because come on) parked in the middle of the road with his blinkers on hoping to catch it in time (he didn’t).

Just finished Philip Pullman’s The Rose Field and, this is the strangest compliment I’ve ever paid a story, it’s anticlimactic? But in a good way? At some point I’ll have to write a review, but in the meantime, I’m going to listen to him and Michael Sheen talk about the book for an hour.

Booted up the 2002 Gamecube game Eternal Darkness and had the stark realization that it was DEFINITELY the first cosmic horror I ever experienced, and the first horror I stuck with. It even predates my love of heavy metal (or caused it?) Needless to say I’ll now be psychoanalyzing myself through it.

Nothing like driving home four hours in a snowstorm while listening to characters in a book repeatedly passing out from exhaustion due to the rigors of travel. Thanks Philip Pullman!

(The Rose Field is really good btw)

Had a spark of divine inspiration for a character today. An electronic-device averse lumberjack-style adventurer who, had all of the hair on their head lasered off. Their name? Laserhead.

This season I’m thankful for the Scrivener mobile app for letting me write while pinned down by an increasingly less tiny hoomon.

Just had my first exposure to My Little Pony via a children’s picture book adaptation I read to my kid. Honestly? Pretty wholesome! Damn the world for making me think there was something depraved about it.

….it’s still for kids though

Just finished Blood Over Bright Haven. Great book, highly recommended. If anyone’s on the fence: How it Started

Literally after seeing this post yesterday, I ran into the bit in Blood Over Bright Haven where a character advises someone that bringing up their society’s crimes is “poor taste.” Got me thinking about how that concept (which used to be called political correctness) is weaponized by the oppressor
and yet my local school board acted like it was in bad taste even to bring it up! in 2025!!

Halfway through M. L. Wang’s Blood Over Bright Haven, and I think I just read the most apt metaphor for losing your religion that I’ve ever read? Like, just reading a good fantasy novel, then “bam” there’s that old religious trauma hanging out. 10/10

Just got to the halfway point of a book that is now the third fantasy book I’ve read in a row to (so far) expertly use witching as an allegory for “anti all the bad stuff of our world,” and I’m here for it

Almost to the end of Eternal Strands, super excited to see where the characters end up. Though it does make me think that some of the reviewers who complained about the main characters being “too nice to each other” just have never been in an affirming space. 🥲

Real question, if you’re a witch going into the woods at night, obviously you want to be barefoot to better connect with nature. But what if it’s snowing?

So I just finished what might be my new favorite book, @alixeharrow.bsky.social’s The Once and Future Witches, then within the same hour receive news we’re gonna get hit by a kind of storm called, and I quote, “thundersnow.” Coincidence? 🤨

In honor of the release of Philip Pullman’s The Rose Field today. Found this last night when I was reading to my kid (original art by Tao Nyeu, from the picture book “Squid and Octopus Friends for Always”)

Child-rearing is great for hearing very eloquent, yet stark answers to universal human experiences. I.e. Do you want the light off? “No. Then I’ll see scary eyes and bodies. And scary mouths!”

Watching all this BTS Weapons stuff coming out to promote the digital and blu-ray, and Amy Madigan isn’t in any of them?! Did she have a clause in her contract to not promote the movie?! Need. More. Gladys. Lore.

Was talking to a friend trying to figure out why we don’t like sports, and we compared them to the only “real” sport, Pro Wrestling. We figured out it came down to storytelling: wrestling tells great stories with stakes, but other sports have to “fake it”

Starting the exhausting process of querying for agents, but I just finished @melissacaruso.bsky.social’s Last Soul Among Wolves and now I’m feeling like writing a critical analysis of the interplay of American political power dynamics and the events and mythology of the Echo Archives books (halp?)
