Most of the time it's definitely just not wanting to learn something, but also when it comes to languages with sounds very unfamiliar to your brain, it's actually difficult. If you didn't speak any language with "rolled" Rs as a kid, that might not be easy for you to do

She had a Scandinavian roommate in college whose name had a sound in it that people legit could not pronounce if they didn't grow up speaking her language. It's an actual thing. I've spoken Japanese since age 12 so I know how to make those sounds. They can be unfamiliar to many people

There's absolutely a discussion to be had about how lots of people don't try hard enough to learn how "foreign" words are pronounced, but it also makes me think of my psych prof in college talking about how native language can affect what sounds you can physically make with your mouth

And no I don't just mean their accents, I'm talking about loan words or just things from other cultures like the word taco. Somehow it's totally fine for them to say tayco but if an American can't pronounce Worcestershire after seeing it for the first time HOLY shit
