All in all a great start to the trip and I was really greatful to be able to experience the site for the first time with my project partners! #archaeology #Jomon

Experimental #archaeology revolving around pithouses has been a central focus at the site. Not only have hundreds of pithouse remains been uncovered, but the site also contains one of the only #Jomon period pithouses with preserved charred structural supports which are displayed at the museum. 🏺

Reconstructed Jomon pithouses have been a research topic of mine for a while, so I was especially excited to see one of them being actively repaired while we were one site! #archaeology #Jomom 🏺

The first main stop was the Goshono Site in northern Iwate prefecture. It was my first time to the site & I was thoroughly impressed. It's a large scale Middle #Jomon site dating back ~4500-4000yrs ago. Despite still not being fully excavated, they've found evidence of over 800 pithouses so far. 🏺

Glad to know I'm not the only one that visualizes some of these models as sitting in a corner eating paste half the time.
