Thanks. I never knew that about how the House and Senate works. Who else knows of this magic?

It's basic civics that doesn't work in the modern era. What with the gerrymandering and the filibuster, the majority of Americans are subject to the tyranny of a tiny minority of Americans.

We need to convince people who have limited faith in their fellow Americans that we need a new constitutional convention. But if we do that hard work, once we write up the amendments, making sure we don't lose whatever marginal protection we get from the senate by redistributing those functions.

That's not what I said. I said it's super easy to transfer essential functions of the senate (like the ability to impeach). The process of getting to that point is hard. It will be extremely hard to convince Americans that we have the power to solve the problems with our democracy.

Super easy to give the power of impeachment to the House. With the senate, we've never removed a president from office because the senate obstructs the process. Clearly that fact has less to lawlessness already.

As the senate works in the month era, it is grossly unfair to the majority of Americans, effectively disenfranchising us because a tiny subset of senators have used their powers to block legislation that the majority of Americans want. Are we still protecting states over individuals?

What check or balance does the senate provide that could not be transferred to an enlarged House?

Fixing this mess is going to be enormously hard no matter what path we chose. We should focus on strategies that will create the change we need, not on what is easier.

Abolish the Senate. The whole body. It serves no purpose that can't be handled by an enlarged House.

The Senate is the problem. Schumer just makes it so OBVIOUS. Both gotta go.

Senator, we need to abolish the Senate. I get that this impacts your living but you may be the only Senator (or one of a handful) who could engage in a conversation about this with a clear eye. The Senate was set up to be deliberately obstructive to the House. It has to go.

True indeed, but abolishing the Senate needs to be the first step. There's no reform that can make the Senate actually work as it should (reforms could make marginal improvements, but we are beyond needing marginal improvements).

When our founders set up our bicameral legislature and put the Senate in as a "check" on the more upstart and unpredictable House, they were working in a context where no other nations were doing this. It made some sense to hedge their bets then, but not anymore. Abolish the Senate!

If they all did this, I'd hate AI much less. Still need to deal with the "it'll destroy the economy" issue. But this brings it closer.

This is true, but I see the urgent geometric increase in demand as a real barrier to the work we are already doing.
I do really appreciate this thread. Don't see very many conversations about this.
