I think I found a way to finance my core facility now. I own an extremely valuable original cerebellum painting that hangs in my office and that was painted and gifted by my former student @kathrynmanning.bsky.social, now a PI at @sickkidsto.bsky.social. @raynorproject.bsky.social

Now it’s real. Psyched to give this lecture at my own institution. Every 2nd year seems to be a non-Nobel laureate, so I fit the bill!! The very first lecture I gave at @lhsccanada.bsky.social and @westernu.ca was in that Auditorium, almost 32 years ago.

Always intimidating to be giving a named lectureship where half the previous speakers seem to be Nobel laureates. But really excited to share with the world our ( when I say "our" I mean Arthur Brown: PI) US DoD funded research in mild traumatic brain injury. MRI meets microscopy !!!

Perks of working @westernu.ca . I have pet therapy for the whole lab in my office and the patients love him too! But puppies would be a nice addition!!!

Institutions want us to engage in collaborative research, but they don't appreciate the time it takes. Yesterday a senior leader was stunned to learn that it takes >20 hours a week to manage one of my grants even with an amazing staff of 3. Six institutions, 95 people. It doesn't run itself.

Since 2000, 3 🇨🇦 born scientists have won prizes in physics, chemistry or medicine after leaving the country for the US. 2 UK born scientists won those prizes after moving to Canada. In that time, no 🇨🇦 born scientist has won for work done in 🇨🇦.

A lot of hard work over a year went into this. Details to follow when the embargo lifts! What I can say is that good peer review can make a paper much better, even if it takes a year. And these peer reviewers were very helpful and constructive 🙏. You'll be able to read their comments online.
