An extended scene in which Mulder does mushrooms and has a prophetic psychedelic vision in which he goes square dancing... which is an episode that ends with him and Scully reuniting while "Ho Hey" by the Lumineers plays... absolute epitome of Obama-era dreck psychic poison.

Episodes about Muslim terrorists that are up there with the worst episodes of 24... episodes with 2010's "trans people are gross!" punchlines... younger replacement versions of Scully and Mulder... a heroic Tucker Carlson stand-in character named Tad O'Malley... played by Joel McHale...

You've committed the logical fallacy of assuming that people weren't also tuning in to watch Home Improvement right before the X-Files came on. Checkmate.

Are people's understandings of the world really that much more diminished by seeing an AI video of a cat getting arrested by TSA for having a suitcase full of fresh salmon today, compared to people in 1995 watching an X-Files cold open where an invisible elephant goes on a rampage in rural Idaho?

Anyway it confirms my wariness about narratives of phone addiction making people stupid, as if that's new. I've been loving this full watch of the X-Files but I always have in the back of my mind the fact that it was put on the air by Rupert Murdoch. Like, it MADE the Fox Network we know today.

It also has the effect, of course, of drawing in a nightly audience that was presumed to be doing the exact same thing: you show them what they might notice is their lived reality, and you instantly have a buy-in on getting what follows in the cold open to be really disturbing and immersive.
