For New England, can I specifically recommend Bar Harbor / MDI in October? It's the end of Tourist season, so you'll be able to get a seat at a restaurant or on a tour, and it's just absolutely gorgeous every day.

It's my Dad's recipe, which is (I'm pretty sure) originally an all-stovetop modification of Julia Childs' Beef Bourginion recipe.
One of the things I love most about it - instead of just sprinkling the flour in over the mire poix/beef, I dredge the browned beef in it.
