I really enjoyed the deft interweaving of the story lines, and the examination of what makes a ‘good’ mother. #read2025

It’s all the stereotypes about mathematicians but it’s a great read.

Two weeks out from the 50th anniversary of the execution of the ‘Balibo Five’, I thought it time to pull this from the shelves. Maniarty intersperses memories of 1975 with the shooting of the movie. A really useful read to understand what happened. #read2025

Dreamlike, folktale prose that’s genuinely beautiful at the sentence level. But I struggled to keep track of small moments, which made the ending less meaningful than it was meant to be. #read2025

One of the earliest books on writing in the social sciences, but updated and useful to other disciplines. The parts about unpretentious writing and ‘throat clearing’ were particularly helpful. #read2025

An important local story I don’t recall reading in fiction before—the exodus of ‘Old Lutherans’ from Prussia in the 1830s to the colony of South Australia. An interesting choice in the middle of the book, and I wanted to spend more time with the villagers, but ultimately a beautiful read. #read2025

I approve of this choice. I would have also accepted 3,4,2,1 and any other permutation of 1,2,3,4.

The most wonderful gift, from the crew at MOD. museum.

Left over from the Broken Exhibition feature ‘What if we all stuck together?’, I’m sure I can find an appropriate use for the Einstein hat tile stickers.

A beautiful way to start the working week, with a walk along the River Murray.

Underwhelming. A modern take on the Stoic control test. I worked this out a long time ago so the book didn’t do much for me, and most of the case studies weren’t relatable. #read2025

Abandoned by their mother as children, half-sisters Matilda and Lara grow up differently. For Matilda, the hidden ramifications of trauma shape everything. The depictions of food and insights into restaurant world are both vivid and devastating. CW: child mistreatment, eating disorders. #read2025
