Proud El Pasoan, husband, father, & SpEd teacher serving as NEA Secretary-Treasurer, the nations largest labor union, committed to the success of public education & workplace democracy through our unions.
Powerful weekend at NEA’s MLT/WLT-West in Denver — sharpening leadership, advancing equity, and building power.
Inspired by student leader Swafiya Twahir & proud of Texas leaders Evelyna and Francesca leading the way.
Bonus: Met Jimmy Kimmel — excited to be among educators. ✊🏽💚 #MLTWLT #WeAreNEA

Honored to keynote NEA’s leadership seminar in Denver.
At a time when immigrant communities are attacked & public education is under threat, educators must organize, build community, & lead with courage.

We are 3 million strong.

So inspired seeing educators celebrate earning & maintaining National Board Certification. Having watched Patty do it & mentor others, I know the sacrifice behind it. Congrats NBCTs—students rise because you invest in yourselves. Proud NEA is a founding partner. ✨🍎

Honored to moderate at the EI Global Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Brussels.

A clear takeaway:
Educators and our unions must lead how AI is used in schools — not tech companies or policymakers.

Today marks 50 years of IDEA — a law that changed lives, including mine as a special education teacher and a dad of a student with an IEP.
I’m grateful for IDEA, but not for Congress’ 50 years of broken promises.
It’s time to FULLY FUND IDEA NOW.

What a country funds is what it values. If we can afford endless war but not a Department of Education, we’re choosing fear over opportunity.

Our children—and our democracy—deserve better.

Powerful weekend at our NEA National Organizing Conference in Chicago.

From defending democracy to building high-density worksites, we’re answering President Pringle’s call to Organize for Power.

Thanks to our Center for Organizing + VP Princess Moss.
When educators organize, we win.

Today is National Education Support Professionals Day!
We celebrate the educators who keep students safe, supported & fed.

If you feed our students, you should be able to feed your own family.

Shame on this administration.

Their latest attempt to dismantle the Dept of Education—during American Education Week—is illegal and immoral. Not only do they want to starve and steal from our students—they want to rob them of their futures.

Anyone who claims to care about children should be livid.

Abbott’s plan to abolish school property taxes would gut $39.5 B from TX schools—with no plan to replace it.
It’s time for new leadership that believes in the promise of public education and invests in every child, not just the privileged few.

On #VeteransDay, I honor my grandfather Jose “Joe” Candelaria, a WWII U.S. Army veteran — and my family members serving today.

They swore an oath to defend our Constitution, not a party or person.

As On Tyranny reminds us: freedom survives only when we defend it. 🇺🇸

Powerful day at Bernard Black Academy w/ Roosevelt EA educators organizing to win majority status! 💪

Campus is already 60% union strong — and 2 new members joined today!

Huge thanks to Worksite Leader Deborah Rosen, & REA Pres. Martha Thomas.

Reopening the government is a basic job duty for the party in charge.

No one should have to choose between providing their families food or healthcare. Yet Republicans are determined to deny both—they put politics over people. They must end the shutdown without robbing families of basic needs.

What an incredible few days at the New Jersey Education Association Convention!
Grateful to Pres. Beatty, VP Robertson, Sec.-Treas. Dare, & NEA Dir. Stacy Yanko for the warm welcome.

Congrats on electing Mikie Sherrill & so many pro-public ed school board wins!

I’m voting tomorrow — because democracy depends on us showing up.

Texas makes it hard to vote. Even college students like my daughter studying out of state can’t request absentee ballots.

Every voice deserves to be heard.

Sec o Ed mocking teacher unions & 🎉 closing ED tells us everything: she’s unqualified to lead a system she doesn’t believe in.

We fight for equity, civil rights, & every student. Extremists attack us because we 🛑 them from dismantling & privatizing public schools.

Federal “compacts.” State-level targeting of faculty. DEI dismantled.

Clearly, it is no secret that this administration does not care about children—especially those with disabilities in special education.

Rather than investing in these students, they are disrupting IDEA and putting it on the back burner at HHS.

This is just their newest way to dismantle education.
Trump Administration Threatens Support for Children With Disabilities
Earlier this month, the Trump Administration took aim at a vital program with deep bipartisan support that provides screening, accommodations, and interventions for 7.5 million disabled children each....
