As a non-american I have no idea what to say to my American friends when they're talking innocent people being murdered by government agents and how there'll never be any kind of accountability for it.

I think this runs into the problem that reviews and critique are seen as buying advice more than anything. It's not supposed to engage with what the author is doing, it's entirely for the consumer.

i was just talking to a fellow trans writer about this: recognizing that when my book comes out next year, most reviews will be infuriatingly shallow, "i liked it" "i didn't like it" "here's some checkboxes" whereas actually engaging with what i'm doing (or failing to do!) is what i want, a kindness
