New acquisition for the Cromwell Museum… this ‘pocket’ road map of Huntingdonshire by Thomas Jenner. In 1643 Jenner republished Matthew Simmon's book 'A Direction for the English Traveller' which had 37 county maps accompanied by a distance table.

A while back Historic England asked for my opinion on which was the oldest pub in London. The result is a new online article that outlines the variables, busts some myths, and points to a couple of genuinely ancient pubs in and around the city...

As it's #WorldCalligraphyDay, our #ObjectOfTheWeek is this lovely letter from Cromwell's mother Elizabeth, written in July 1643. It's probably the only example of her handwriting and signature - which is lovely and clear (unlike the notation below it!)

I hope Miss Kenworthy and Mr Hammond would be impressed I have just spent the day doing battle with 17thc Jesuit Latin armed only with an A level done in 1976 and it’s not been a disaster.
