Sad news. Tsvetan Atanasov, a passionate collector of all things Eastern Bloc and the founder of Retro Museum in Varna, Bulgaria, died from cancer yesterday.

If ever you're in Varna, do go to Retro Museum and see the impressively restored cars and everyday items from 1944-1989 Eastern Europe.

Tale of Silyan was very close to the bone for me. That's basically my family on screen there. Even more so because it's set in a village down the road from my father's birthplace.

Sorry to say but the translation and subtitles were rubbish. Often they bore little relation to what was being said.

Testament, the latest film by Mirza Begović from Bosnia and Herzegovina, is showing this weekend at Odeon cinemas in Acton, London (right where many from ex-Yugoslavia live), Birmingham and Coventry

And yes, it's subtitled.

Ethnic Australian comedian troupe Sooshi Mango are going global again! This time they're also going to Skopje, Macedonia.

I have my tickets already for their London show. Basically it's like watching my parents and grandparents on stage 😆

Happy name day to everyone who has these names featured on this map of the EU... though where are the female names?

As for people from Old-Calendar Orthodox Christian countries, we know when the "real" St Nick's Day is on 😉😄

Another 50th birthday today in #Bulgaria...

Sofia's Studentski Grad ("Student City"), a purpose-built suburb for university students, was opened on this day in 1975.

While still the centre for student living in Sofia, the area is now more notorious for its wild nightlife.

Pics of then and now...

Happy 50th birthday today to Bulgaria's Sofi Marinova!

Proudly Roma, Sofi won the hearts of Bulgarians with her impressive vocal range, ability to sing in a variety of genres and her frank nature.

Her talent is on great display here with her rendition of the Bulgarian folk song 'Danyova mama'

Bulgarian Roma superstar Sofi Marinova tonight starts her series of arena concerts in Sofia to mark her 50th birthday on Friday.

Sofi is the first Bulgarian singer to sell out Bulgaria's largest arena four nights in a row!

Deliberate confusion in Bulgaria?

Bulgarian social media is awash with notices for more protests this evening. However, Bulgaria's media (concentrated in the hands of "politician" Deyan Peevski) is claiming this protest is "fake" and implying "foreign meddling" is behind it.

Seeing that 29 November used to be Yugoslavia's national day, here are some pics I took last year of the Tito monument next to the Iron Gate border crossing between Serbia and Romania on the River Danube

Translation tip:

Some languages put "quotes" for street or building names.

Not English: names in quotes otherwise denote a nickname or it's unofficial.

Small details like these can shift meaning more than you'd think.

Always use the target language's punctuation in translation.
