Portland is a “war-ravaged” city that is “on fire,” President Trump warns. But I braved the artillery fire and militia checkpoints to bring you this video report from the front lines.

Honored to give a book talk in Cincinnati's Aronoff Ctr about my memoir, "Chasing Hope." Such a beautiful space, and organized together with the great city library (libraries rock!), so I took this selfie with the audience. And my heart melted at the standing ovation at the end. Thanks, Cincinnati!

Glad to meet during UN Week with @WHO chief @DrTedros. It is very sad to see the Trump administration pulling the US out of the World Health Organization, which saves lives by fighting epidemics and disease and more. We should be on the side of WHO, not on the side of viruses.

Our tax dollars at work, costing children's lives worldwide. Secretary Rubio, do you want this to be your legacy? My column: www.nytimes.com/2025/09/20/o...

The paperback of my memoir, "Chasing Hope," is out today! Thanks to Bonnie Garmus for the quote on the paperback cover: "This is the kind of memoir that changes the world. Read it." Please do, and help make the paperback a best-seller, too! www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/720814...

When the world's a mess and I want to beat my head against a wall, I instead find refuge in the 'cathedral of wilderness." Much recommended nature therapy: www.nytimes.com/2025/08/23/o... (that's Sheryl hiking in front of me in the Wallowas)

At a time when so much is going wrong, Americans have one great treasure: our wilderness, left to us by past visionaries. Every summer I escape to go worship in this "cathedral of wilderness": www.nytimes.com/2025/08/23/o... (that photo below is of Sheryl hiking ahead of me)

Family vacation backpacking the #Wallowa High Route in the Wallowa Mountains of northeastern Oregon. Grueling and glorious. Backpacking makes the best family vacations, because you're stuck together without screens facing common challenges from hills to streams to mosquitoes. Some photos:

I was off backpacking the loop around Three Sisters mountains in central Oregon. I do it every year, and it's glorious therapy for all that is going wrong elsewhere. I worship in the Cathedral of Wilderness!

Reporting by Patrick Kingsley and NYT colleagues shows that Netanyahu dragged out the war in Gaza partly for political reasons. Thousands perished--nearly 10,000 kids under 11 have died in Gaza so far--so Bibi could stay in office and out of prison. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/11/m...

Our annual group expedition to Ashland OR for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Saw six terrific plays, and great to see the festival coming back after some struggles. My favorite: "Jitney" by August Wilson, followed by "Importance of Being Earnest" and "Julius Caesar."

Happy Fathers Day! With warm memories of my dad, who taught me to love backpacking, to tolerate haying (in the photo below) and to be intolerant of injustice. Dads rock!

SecState Rubio claims that no on has died because of USAID cuts and suggested that I had lied in my reporting. So here I show him photos of specific children who have died because of the Trump administration's reckless cancelation of aid: www.nytimes.com/2025/05/31/o...

From an American doctor friend volunteering in Gaza: "So many dead little kids. This man showed up to the hospital today carrying this burlap bag asking for help. He said it held the remains of his daughter after his home was bombed yesterday. All he found was her head, her leg, and her hand."

Pope Francis preached humility and was committed to helping those in need, including refugees and trafficking survivors. He was a great moral voice who used his power not for his own comfort but on behalf of others. I was honored to meet him. RIP, Pope Francis. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/04...

Meet Evan Anzoo, a five-year-old boy in South Sudan who died when Elon Musk shut down USAID and the boy lost access to his HIV meds. Musk says no one has died because of the aid shutdown, but that's because he didn't look. RIP, Evan, you deserved better. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Congrats to my Times Opinion colleague @byjamesrobinson.bsky.social on his powerful new book, "Whale Eyes" -- a heartfelt memoir about disability, how we're seen and how people see us.

In the UN vote today on Russian aggression, Trump's America sided with Russia, North Korea and Belarus in defending Putin's war. The U.S. was not even as independent-minded as Cuba and Iran, both of which abstained. In the world's fight for liberty, I fear the U.S. has just switched sides.

The secret American plan (according to Trump): Have USAID supply enough condoms for Hamas fighters to have sex 325 times a day, every day. That would wipe out Hamas as a fighting force more quickly than Israeli bombardment. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/o...
