Cllr Nick Hartley - Green Party
@nickhartleygreen.bsky.social
Green Party Councillor for Byker, Newcastle. Clinical Psychologist. Unite the Union member. My personal tweets, these are not in an official capacity.
This week I called for more lessons to be learnt from Bonfire Night; one citywide lead on the night and a contact point in every ward so we can better feed in information for prevention.

This builds on our Green Party motion backing a ban on loud firework sales #Newcastle

Particular thanks to @kingsfundlibrary.bsky.social’s Adam Lent, our hosts @bradfordgreens.bsky.social, and AGC leads Jennie & Julian.

And a big thank you to @southtynegreens.bsky.social’s Cllr David Francis for grounding us in our values and the need to stay bold in challenging times.

Hope is here

A highlight was meeting Karel Williams and Julie Froud - the professors behind a 2022 Byker report on liveability and authors of When Nothing Works. Their insights helped me think afresh about how we tackle litter, antisocial behaviour and economic challenges in the East End.

Great to hear from Chief Exec Harriet Lamb about the rise in Green membership and the growing energy across our movement.

A huge boost as we look to work even more closely with our communities and deliver change where it’s most needed.

Feeling inspired after my visit to Bradford for the Association of Green Councillors conference.

So many practical ideas on cleaning our streets, cutting bills, creating play spaces, rethinking social care and greening our council budgets - real action.

In June, with help from Food & Solidarity, we passed a motion at Newcastle Full Council to end the poverty-making two child benefit cap.

Today the government finally listened.

Let this be the start of a reversal of toxic politics in this country.

Newcastle’s Council Leader is right to admit Labour’s budget doesn’t benefit our city enough.

Reeves missed a chance to be bold: to build a fairer tax system, reverse cuts to councils, and put people and planet first.

Newcastle can vote Green in May to send a clear signal.

White Ribbon Day remains necessary in a society where sexism and misogyny harms directly and creates the conditions for violence against women and girls.

Thank you to Cllr Maines and Newcastle City Council for raising the White Ribbon at the Civic Centre today.

When you call 999 for the code, the Fire & Rescue Service are alerted and can reach the river fast from Byker Fire Station. By holding onto the rope, you can keep trying until you reach someone in trouble - improving the chance of saving a life.

Stay safe near the water!

Good to join St Peter’s Basin residents yesterday for training on using the new emergency throw lines along the Tyne.

Big thanks to Tommy from Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue for showing us the ropes (literally!). These new lines replace the old life rings, and they work better in real emergencies.

Wondering how this will age…

#RemembranceSunday has personal meaning to us all.

It is an honour as a Councillor to join service men and women at the remembrance parade at Old Eldon Square.

I think of family, conflicts around the world and the service that so many have given. Together for peace and justice.
November 9, 2025 at 6:37 PM
I was proud to join all councillors cross-party on Wednesday supporting the motion to strengthen Newcastle City Council’s commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant.

#RemembranceSunday is a day when we hold up a mirror to ourselves as a society. To remember. For solidarity. For peace.

As the sun rises over Byker, we’re looking forward to tonight’s winter lights “switch on” over at Hadrian Square and Shields Road. The second year running.

Thanks to everyone at Newcastle City Council & Lizzie West, creative director, for making this happen! Get along for 5.30 ❄️

18 months ago when I rocked up for my debut as a @greenparty.org.uk councillor on #BBCPoliticsNorth, I’d never have thought that by now we’d have @zackpolanski.bsky.social being asked by @bbcrichardmoss.bsky.social about Greens possibly running Newcastle Council in May…. but that just happened! 👀

Nearly every resident I spoke to today was glad that @nclgreenparty.bsky.social were out, helping to pick up local concerns and picking up litter.

There were a few friendly disagreements, but nothing like some of the vitriol you get on Twitter/X.

Real life isn’t X.

Now to address the casework!

Ahead of @zackpolanski.bsky.social’s visit to the North East, here’s a reminder of @owenjones.bsky.social’s reaction when Zack told him about Greens winning in working class communities like South Tyneside and here in Byker!

🎉 Happy 30th to @mariecurieuk.bsky.social Newcastle!

Great to be back at the hospice where I worked as a Psychologist. Such inspiring colleagues.

Proud too this month to help pass a Newcastle City Council motion supporting those dying in poverty and to join Marie Curie’s councillor network. 🌼

The Geordie Springsteen did good! Well deserved, Sam. Great news for the North East #mercuryprize
October 16, 2025 at 10:04 PM
If we had a donation for every time someone said ‘there’s only the Greens or Reform worth voting for’, we’d have the millions that Reform’s backers pour in to keep politics for themselves.

Greens step up in our communities, build collective action and get sh*t done.

Join us.

The #MercuryPrize coming to Newcastle hasn’t been without controversy but there’s definitely a buzz!

Great to hear the toon getting shout outs on the radio.

All eyes on Sam Fender to bring home the prize too!

Join our favourite Mackem @laurenlaverne.bsky.social for the result from 9.30pm on BBC4.

More @nclgreenparty.bsky.social members means more Byker Clean Streets litterpicks.

Thank you to all who joined today in Janet Square.

Excellent ideas from residents to brighten up the place and tackle fly-tipping. More news coming soon on that.

Join every 2nd & 4th Sunday, DM for info.

Maybe next time when @zackpolanski.bsky.social is invited, Question Time can run an extended programme?

We Greens have spent a long time listening on doorsteps and working hard in our communities.

No wonder, now we are getting some media coverage, that we have a lot to say! #bbcqt
