Cornell paid millions to get illegally frozen grants unfrozen, and effectively agreed to help the Trump regime's assault on academic freedom to get bad faith investigations dropped, while also agreeing the govt can launch new investigations!

BREAKING: World outside America exists. Global economy is global. Picking trade fights with everyone at once rather than rallying allies to pressure China together still very stupid.

As best I can tell from the outside, the New York election is between two competing views of the city and the people in it.

Whenever we get out of this, antitrust needs to be back on the menu in a big way.
Defense contractor and car maker and social network? Not anymore.
Web hosting and retail and defense and a big newspaper? Nope.
Cloud computing and TikTok and CBS and CNN and more? Get ready for some rough riding.

The recent spike in Americans' anti-immigrant sentiment didn't happen in 2021 or 2022, correlating with the pandemic and related crime increase, nor any Biden policy.
It happened in 2024. When crime was lower, but the Trump campaign and associated anti-immigrant scapegoating was at a fever pitch.

Trump was already president, politicizing and botching disaster response (eg Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico).
As I wrote in "The Upside-Down Election," his lies about Hurricane Helene flooding in 2024 showed voters the choice.
Millions liked it, or didn't care.

Did the New York Times have an editorial meeting where they said something like “these are trustworthy people, we should take their word, put it headlines, that’s good journalism.”
Did they go so far as to say “we should help the Trump administration sell this action”?
Or do they just sorta do it?

Isn't the butt of this joke usually centrists?
I really don't think the best way to beat fascists is to dabble in a little fascism, and strongly disagree with those who think that everyone has a Nazi phase (most don't) or that without at least some tolerance for Nazi stuff you can't appeal to men.

All this Nazi stuff is acceptable in America now. Instead of widely shunned and kept to the fringes, they now get defenses, or at least excuses, from mainstream figures.
I don't think Nazi symbols coming back in and Nazi-like activity rising around the same time is a coincidence. They're related.

This is embarrassing. I’m embarrassed for Bret Stephens. If you’re going to write why a mayoral candidate scares you, shouldn’t you name some bad things you think he’d do as mayor, not rely on negative interpretation of words he said in college?

Everyone outside of NYT news analysts can see this, right? The way Trump's acting shows that he minds a great deal.
If he were happy with the current situation, he wouldn't be trying to bully Dems into rescuing Republicans from their own problem, while loudly insisting that he likes how it's going.

Here are the images I made for my No Kings signs, if anyone wants to do anything with them. The current US government has gotten this backwards, so I thought a reminder was necessary.
If you're curious, I went to Staples and got the pictures printed on foam boards. But anything would work.

The notion that crime and the economy were so bad 2023-24 that Americans reacting to objective personal material conditions had to do a fascism does not hold water.
If material, why would it be disproportionately white? Do you think nonwhite people don't experience crime or economic challenges?

Did worsening material conditions cause the decline in confidence in democracy?
Empirically, it looks like the answer is no, at least not the main factor. Confidence in democracy has declined for decades, even as crime was decreasing, and the economy was up or down at various points.
