Yet something inside me resisted this collapse. I wrote, even during the expulsion, even under the thunder of the bombs. I wrote about the children who disappeared, the shrouds we lacked for the dead, the houses that turned to dust. I wrote through fatigue, through grief, through fear. But I never wrote through hunger. Until March 2025. That’s when hunger took up residence in my body. It stopped knocking at the door. It broke open my chest and sat inside me.

inaturalist tells me this bug is named Acalolepta rusticatrix, but I'm gonna call it Loretta.
a big, brown bug! the antenna stick out at 90 degree angles from its head and look segmented like bamboo. it has six legs, with sweet little grabby paws for feet. Just two eyes, black. mandibles a bit like an ant. it's about the size of a medium cockroach, but looks friendlier. the same friendly, brown bug, seen from above. the back has markings in alternate shades of brown, like V's.
