American Beauty (1999) - Probably hit harder in 1999 but also Kevin Spacey is playing Kevin Spacey and all of the visuals are the most heavy handed pieces of symbolism I've ever seen.

A ★½ review of American Beauty (1999)
I'd love to say that the discomfort in watching American Beauty is 100% entirely intentional and part of the film's black comedy. But if I'm being totally honest I don't think that it is, I think it's...

We also both have to agree that Captain America Civil War is a terrible adaptation but a much better movie than the book it is adapting.

Hot take: The Shining (1980) is both a good movie and a good adaptation in the same way Frankenstein (2025) is despite what Stephen King says.

Frankenstein (2025) - I don't know how people are saying it doesn't feel like Shelley because it does.

A ★★★★½ review of Frankenstein (2025)
Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is my first del Toro film but like the fifth adaptation of Shelley's Frankenstein I've seen. I've got a feeling that on a rewatch I might actually find this to be one...

Doctor Who: Planet of the Spiders (1974) - I have a soft spot for this one despite some of the mess. Thematically it’s quite rich but there’s also a 20 minute chase scene.

A ★★★½ review of Doctor Who: Planet of the Spiders (1974)
Jon Pertwee’s time on Doctor Who comes to an end with a story that’s a big celebration to all the things that this production crew loved to do.  There is an entire episode that is just a chase with se...

Look I’m a man, I’m not entirely sure I can be a good feminist. Probably mediocre at best.

Fuck I forgot about batgirl. And Catwoman (though that’s probably because on my shelf DC brands it as Batman).

Back to the Future Part II (1989) - Acts one and two are solid but that final act is a masterpiece holding up this film.

A ★★★★½ review of Back to the Future Part II (1989)
I think there’s something really special about the third act of this film that really elevates its status from great film and good sequel to excellent film and great sequel.  Robert Zemeckis makes the...

Clerks (1994) - Kevin Smith has a pretty funny debut even if the low budget makes it very rough around the edges.

Halloween: Party Favours by: Georgia Cook: Cook casually drops one of the best Big Finish stories of the year without so much as a word. Seriously, this one is horrific tragedy, centering a relationship that has just come over the honeymoon phase so it’s becoming terribly strained. Maybe they
