my parents were hosting a holiday party, there were 20+ people, and one of our cats leaps from the ground, passing over the table, nabs a hunk of meat, and vanishes in one smooth motion. she managed to run and hide her ill-gotten plunder such that we had to move furniture to find her.

ben barres talked a lot about his experiences in academia, and he noted just how much better treated he was post-transition than before. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/200...

and that's not going into the horrible shit i've experienced or heard fellow trainees talk about happening to them. just a point that these assumptions are so so normalized

once had a faculty member tell me i need to explain things like i was explaining it to my mother

my mother has a DVM - doctor of vet med - and i regularly ask her advice on matters pertaining to my research

there is a regular, casual assumption that women are not as educated or capable as men

kept seeing people comment re: Mamdani's policy on free public transit calling it "unrealistic" and meanwhile i live in iowa city, which has free public transit.

i keep telling people i have encountered more overtly socialist policies here in iowa than in portland oregon and i have not been believed!!

i fully believe you could run a socialist here in iowa and win, up to and including governor, senator, or house rep.

3 - my grandfather gave me my first copy of this book, it was his favorite book. i come back to it again and again.
4 - a very good way to learn about one of the founders of food & drug regulation. emphasized how much we don't regulate things until it hurts someone.

1 - the first book i read from an author who was not European or North American. 10th grade English class, the teacher assigned only books from non-white, generally non-American, authors.
2 - an exquisite memoir. gripped me in and i read it in one go.

i do have to wonder if teaching by the three cueing method also predisposes people to being unwilling to look up unfamiliar words. if you're trained to guess or skip everything unfamiliar, you might not ever use a dictionary when encountering an unfamiliar word

"In his view, three cueing is perfectly valid, drawn from a different kind of evidence than what scientists collect in their labs.

"My science is different," Goodman said."

my alarm bells are ringing!! that is not how science works!!!

if i get to be a professor, i want to be the kind that meets students where they're at and helps them get to where they want to go. i don't want to use grades as a means of intimidation. students don't learn best when they're scared of grading.

i appreciated that he could say that if students were failing, it was not their fault - they needed better instruction.

p. chem is not known for being an easy class, but he taught so well several of my phd classes were easier because of taking his class.
