This photo shows the double page of the visitors' book. At the top of the right page the date can just about be read (9th December 1965) so it seems that the Beatles checked into the Grand on that date.

It looks very similar. John seems to have been a regular at the pictures.The Abbey is mentioned in his original lyrics for In My Life.

You're right about it being a former cinema, in this case the Abbey Cinema, Wavertree. George (and John) used to watch films there. When I first saw it (in 1983) it was Lennon's Supermarket!
