weird, thought the hatch was more common. skewed from living near a college town in new england. suspect nyc might skew a bit more towards hatches. i have a Friend who drives a mazda 3 hatch, before a subaru forester

eh wagons have been somewhat displaced by crossovers ( really raised wagons) in Europe. still popular but not like 20 years ago
December 4, 2025 at 8:16 PM
remarkable that it was built when car ownership was much lower

“US has a better highway system than Europe” feels odd to me as NY’s feel less modern than western europe’s
December 4, 2025 at 5:36 PM
eh NY just stopped building much after the 50s. What’s remarkable is how old our auto infrastructure is. Bridges and Tunnels mostly 20s and 30s, ditto with long island and westchester parkways. LIE (I-495) is the exception; it’s postwar
December 4, 2025 at 5:34 PM
some north Jersey -NYC separation is political geography but imo a lot is physical. It is far cheaper to build a bridge or tunnel over the East River than Hudson and in the late 1800s technology didn’t exist for a Hudson river bridge or tunnel
December 4, 2025 at 2:56 PM
looked up the Holland Tunnel on wikipedia, says something about geography: Hudson River is low elevation so elevation descent isn’t much while a bridge needs to be very have to allow shipping. Cost trade offs must have different 100+ years ago

i wonder when tunnels rather than bridges are a better option. one difference is tunnels eat up less entrance space, so better for urban areas
December 4, 2025 at 2:45 PM
it’s all road or rail tunnels

Chicago air traffic has that much going to nearby midwest cities? Figured most drive

( i was taking the 7 from sunnyside going to MoMa, was going to switch at Queensboro Plaza to the N but the wait was about 10 minutes. Pre smart phone would have switched and lost time).

i think when the N frequency is that low, the W isn’t running. I thought the N runs express in Manhattan so not with the R? Depends on when? De-interlining the Manhattan Bridge so the 6th avenue lines and Broadway lines don’t switch is the best low effort improvement imo

N this sunday is every 12. Been a while since i rode it, is that the usual ?

I don’t think she was in Juno? she’s too young
December 2, 2025 at 7:56 PM
yea this works better into the city than outbound

i manually check for shorter jamaica connections, though i know they are not guaranteed. Rather have a chance of missing than a guaranteed longer trip
December 2, 2025 at 2:37 AM
the GO commuter rail network is far more extensive than Montreal’s. hard to convert a section to metro
December 1, 2025 at 1:16 AM
pre Grand Central, i almost always transferred ( much more conveniently than now!) to brooklyn. direct rides were rare and dumb to provide as the usual option
December 1, 2025 at 12:38 AM
I don’t get how through running helps. the demand to brooklyn is far less manhattan realistically so you’d want most trains to go to manhattan. without transfers, the frequency to brooklyn would be unusably slow and cut into manhattan frequency

i’m just annoyed that it won’t be done when i visit next year when it was under construction in 2022. what were the special circumstances?
November 30, 2025 at 11:49 PM
seems like Vancouver has gotten worse at building transit. Broadway subway is overpriced and really delayed
November 30, 2025 at 11:28 PM
if it goes, i wonder who’ll take all the jfk slots
November 28, 2025 at 7:17 PM
me too

tangent: when i flew Porter out of LGA, the staff at the gate was JetBlue. makes sense since they have a few flights/ day

T4 is overcrowded so the worst spot for it. T7 feels like a leftover terminal for airlines with a small presence
