Push the responsibility onto the irresponsible party. Clearly articulate that you never wanted this, but that aggression must be met.

It’s called “mirroring,” and it’s one of the few ways I know to deal with a faithless partner you can’t separate from. You never escalate first, but you match every threat, and you never deescalate first, only after the other side does.

No politics is more cutthroat than church politics. Maybe academia, or HOA’s but probably not.
