Using waste energy to drive chemical reactions

Senior Vice Chancellor's Research Fellow (Group Leader) - RMIT University, Australia

Catalysis; Energy Harvesting; Materials Science; Polymers; Electrochemistry; Triboelectricity
We also had a lot of fun testing these at the RMIT #FLAMME Lab - showing how these work for next-generation PPE for first responders.

We *think* - and the next step is demonstrating control of it - that the wobble you see when a droplet jumps releases a little bit of energy, which can interact with the surface to create (or transfer) an electric charge. 💧

I love the fact we still can't (properly) answer something so simple. ⁉️

Finishing off with the last experiments of the year - #XPS of #Energy Harvesters.

They're a bit fragile when you stick them to carbon tape! 😅

Happy Festive Season 🎇 to everyone.

Another great talk at #AES24 - this one on simply changing the surface chemistry of #Carbon black to make #LIB cathodes work at much higher rates!

Well done to Donghyuck Park!

His talk was based on his recently published work here: doi.org/10.1039/D3TA...

Brilliant talk from 1st Year Ph.D. student Dumindu Dassanayaka at #AES24 today.

Dumindu spoke about using triboelectric laminates for green (electro-)chemical reactions.

He's done amazingly well to get intriguing results only 9 months into his degree!

Day 2 of the Australasian Electrochemistry Symposium #AES24.

What a wonderful event so far with a brilliant group of people.

I've heard talks from #ozchem ists from biosensors through to large scale Aluminium refining.

Some amazing learnings from fundamental to applied #electrochem!

Wonderful to be at the Australasian Electrochemistry Symposium #AES24 presenting our work on #Decoupled #Electrolysis using #TiO2 with @andrissutka.bsky.social

A great group of people here and already some wonderful discussions.

Congratulations to Donghyuck Park, a Ph.D. candidate with Amanda Ellis (UniMelb) and myself (RMIT) who just won the Energy Materials Poster Prize ⚡ at the MEI Symposium!

His poster, on improving Lithium Ion #Battery 🔋 Cathodes is just the start of his amazing work!

Surprised there is still so much emphasis on Carbon Nanotubes in my scholargoggler.com word cloud - but there you go!

I think I make too many #hybrid #architectures 🤦‍♂️

Our #Neuromorphic Computing workshop finished with a long facilitated discussion led by Prof. Mark Sanderson @iroldie.bsky.social moving towards a Roadmap for Australasian Neuromorphic capability.

Great support and perspectives from Prof. Jared Cole @quantschmant.bsky.social among many others!

ARC DPs outcomes will be announced tomorrow

@arc-tracker.bsky.social

The next round of EOIs is due to the ARC in just under 3 weeks.

The event was opened by:

the Dean of the School of Science at RMIT Prof. Mark Osborne, and

the Director of the Enabling Impact Platform for Advanced Materials, Manufacturing and Fabrication - both providing a wondeful overview of the potential impact of Neuromorphic computing.

Thank you!

Some different and fun experiments with PhD student Tahnim Sultana looking at #upconversion materials for active surfaces.

We've got some pretty 'hot' results we're hoping to finish off and share soon!

It was great to be at #ICEAN2024 earlier this month in Newcastle, Australia.

Met many new and old friends - and thoroughly enjoyed talking on #energyharvesters and #greenchemistry

This trip was supported by a #TeAparangi Catalyst:Seeding grant - focussed on Ion implantation.

Some more #energyharvesting with #triboelectric polymers.

Seeing how they convert motion to electricity from high frequency vibrations.

We're working on some new materials that generate huge amounts of internal #staticelectricity ⚡.

These operate on a similar priciple to our laminates (doi.org/10.1002/smll...) - but we're seeing over 10x higher current and charge outputs - from much thinner material🗑️🔋!

Stay tuned 👀
