My plumber tells me that you can still get good things at a plumbing supply store. Better than even ordering directly from the company on line.

Most of the essays focus on academia, academic freedom, and campus culture, not policy issues, like climate change.

True! But the conversations are still interesting in light of how much changed between the time they were written and when they were discussed. I haven’t read the book, but they summarize each essay as part of the conversation

Laurence Krauss interviewed most of the authors for a podcast early this summer, giving them a chance to discuss the impact of recent events. Some double down on the left being the problem, but most think the right is a much greater threat. It’s been interesting! open.spotify.com/show/4aBdrV8...

Yes, I can see that. There seem to be a lot of nihilistic young men who shoot up a school and then kill themselves. Is it underlying illness potentiated by hours on toxic websites? So many seem to slide under the radar, being seen as quiet kids who don’t cause particularly cause trouble

I’m so sorry for your son - it must be heartbreaking to see the impact of mental illness on his life. I agree that mental illness underlies a great deal of violence and antisocial behavior. Denying it to avoid stigmatization doesn’t help anyone. But it’s still hard to predict which kid will act.

Not conflating at all. Just saying youths prone to carry out shootings don’t stand out from other teens. We do need to be more proactive w/ teens whose behavior is aggressive & unpredictable, not downplay risks. I have family & friends raising kids w/ major mental illnesses. You have my support.

About 20% of adolescents have a mental health diagnosis, and some are clearly undiagnosed, so shooters are not really outliers.

I don’t think anyone is saying Tylenol is the only cause. Could just be one factor in a person who’s genetic disposed. This is a reasonable summary of a recent systematic review. Says to minimize use of Tylenol. www.mountsinai.org/about/newsro...

If someone you know buys into claims about "genetic optimization" of embryos using polygenic scores of cognition, just send them our 2024 paper on Beethoven & musicality. We wrote it to help communicate limits of individual-level genetic predictions & complexity of links between DNA & behaviour. 🧪👇
