This Thanksgiving, I am grateful for the discovery of fermentation. It gives us so much more than wine and beer. Yogurt, vinegars, soy sauce, fermented black beans, dosa, injera, sourdough, miso, kimchi, fish sauce, kombucha, sauerkraut... what else?

R tried making chocolate cream pie, but he didn't cook the custard long enough, so now (even after a full day of chilling) we have a pie plate of chocolate soup.

I stayed up way too late reading about Andhra Pradesh (a state of the Republic of India) and now I am awake only because I have a dentist appointment. But hey, at least I have leftover South Indian food for breakfast.

Went to the city and had a rare indoor restaurant meal. There's a South Indian restaurant in a strip mall that does most of their business on a lunch buffet and takeout. At 4:15 the restaurant was practically empty. The only other patrons appeared to be Indian. The menu doesn't explain or describe

I’m about to toss these four #handspun skeins into their water bath. They were a set of BFL/silk braids from @knitterkim.bsky.social . I’m pleased with the consistency; they’re all about 400 yards/4 ounces.

The short ribs were so tender that it was impossible to remove them from the pan whole. The caramelized meat just came off the bones. I re-made the Korean bbq sauce on the stovetop, and we tossed the meat with the sauce. I made oi muchim (cucumber salad) to balance the richness of the meat.

We never got to the “Convection Roast” part of the recipe because the sauce had all turned to black gunk by the end of the first stage of cooking. This is what the pan looked like after we removed the meat. (The meat was fine though; more on that later.) We had to throw the pan away.

I've got short ribs roasting in the oven in homemade Korean barbecue sauce. This is the first time we've roasted meat in the new oven, so in a few hours we'll see how the "Convection Roast" setting performs.

Last night's West African peanut stew adaptation. This version is vegetarian, with chickpeas and brown rice. Main ingredients: sweet potatoes, tomatoes, peanut butter, and kale; seasoned with coriander, cumin, a little cayenne (subbed for more authentic Scotch bonnet chilies) and a little cinnamon.

Professionals are currently cleaning most of my house and I am having all sorts of First Generation College Student feelings. My mom cleaned motel rooms when I was little. I’ll never fully get over feeling like I’m on the wrong ‘side’ of this scene.
