What never happened was that I was put in any physical or material danger, because as far as most people were aware I was 'someone from the United Kingdom' and anonymity really is the best defense you have when it comes to that.

As a kid I had it drilled into me that I was never to disclose my real name, location, age or other identifiable information so that people couldn't groom me.
But that's hard on marketers, so.
