They are dead metal with a speaking voice, centuries old but still alive with music every Sunday, the only things in the holy church that are to be han- dled by laymen. The voice of bells is not noise but neither is it quite music: instead it is almost pure sound, a kind of auditory prayer. In the Middle Ages, bells were honorary people, bap- tized like children and under the protection of the saints whose names they bore. They provided safe passage for the dead, broke the power of lightning and thunder, and - most to our purpose dispelled evil spirits. Down to the end of the nineteenth century we find people telling folk tales that hint at the old exorcizing powers, such as the story about a goblin family who have to move house because they cannot abide the sound of a newly in- stalled peal of bells. It follows that the Devil, too, will be angry and afraid when he hears the bells ring.

Similar situation here but my name comes from these books, with which my brother was obsessed at the time of my birth. The Tank Engine was a few years out from his weirdly unstoppable fame, just a nerdy book series for dorks at the time.
