Grumpy about gaming, politics, writing, and memes.
We never conceived of needing it.

Thank you for listening!

That happens in general. I think that's indicative of any work that analyzes a subject from any perspective. I don't think it's a problem that can be strictly solved, only improved.

speakin honestly from our past experiences (albeit with a different Youtuber) of actually, well, reading some of the sources cited, most viewers just see a reference list n assume that speaks for itself

Those are skills I was only briefly taught, and only in elementary and middle school.

I'm not condemning or endorsing this form of education, that's just been my view if it. I think a major hole that could be filled in that ecosystem would be teaching how to examine resources, understand them, and find pitfalls in our news and educations.

I have not seen this specific video yet because I have been very disengaged for a while from her community and those of her contemporaries, but that has been my experience and observation.

From politics to gender to news to history, I have a broad but shallow view of these things, and I dig into subjects more if I feel I should or need to. So people like Thorne are a big part of that self directed education because their work does broad dives into topics

And that's probably going to be very common among Thorne's audience, even the relatively active and well informed ones. That is true of me as well, usually because I have a very, very broad range of interests. I read and listen to a lot of different topics

And I consider myself fairly thorough on getting second voices and opinions. But I'm not literate in reading academic sources, particularly scientific ones. It's not something I was ever taught and not something I ever had the time or patience to do on my own.
September 6, 2025 at 10:37 PM
Yes. Like, straight up, you are correct. Audiences don't follow up on the resources and often don't have the literacy to understand them. If you asked me to read and understand a scientific paper, I would tell you it would be my first time.

The more productive way to approach this is, I think, to present a more complete or at least more focused piece than Thorne was perhaps prepared to do, or perhaps more accurately, able to be prepared.

This is a wisdom I have thoughts on, actually.

A lot of people get their understanding from people like Thorne on history and modern issues. They're their "textbook." And it's hard to admit when you're only source is wrong because it is incomplete.

That's where the line is for me, certainly.

We need states to declare no confidence in the federal government.

I'm starting to think wasting their time and money is the intention. Exhaust and thin the one organization - the military - that could actually, physically and politically, oppose him.
