The idiosyncratic element here is Sliwa’s own positioning; no doubt NY GOP folks see an opportunity but Trump’s personal preference for Cuomo over Sliwa could still mess that up

I don’t really even think we know whether this is the case: how much of Mamdani’s support is his base, how much of it genuine Dem loyalists and how much is even centrists who were appalled by Cuomo personally?

Think I disagree with this. I don’t think he wins if he’s the not the Dem nominee. He’d have had a decent chance if the nominee had been Cuomo, but I think he still loses just w their %s flipped. Against anyone else from the Dem field I can’t image him winning as an independent candidate
