For a while now I’ve been feeling cheated by and disappointed in technology. And ‘try to look at the bright side’ or ‘find the silver lining’ aren’t feasible approaches.

Tech optimism feels extremely naïve to me right now.

- Look for proof when something is presented as fact.
- If something is framed as a promise (x is going to materialise ‘soon’, or ‘in n years’), it’s a scam.
- Gather info on who is saying what, and try to follow the money while doing that.

Because what’s weighing my whole fiction writing down is the burden of having to finish old projects. I will finish my sci-fi novel, of course, but I need some ‘fresh meat’ that doesn’t trap me into constantly thinking about these old projects. It’s really hampering me.

He was calmly chewing his steak, and he resumed our conversation, raising his fork and pointing it somewhere past my shoulder: “What does it mean to be a writer? It means you have to do a lot of other stuff that is not writing.”

I woke up shortly after. It all felt disarmingly true.

If anyone who wants to start a blog today asked me for advice, I’d tell them “Don’t end up posting drivel and forgettable one-line commentary just because you feel the need to ‘show up every day’ or ‘show up regularly’. Leave the slop to AI. Make your voice matter differently.”
