One can have some understanding for people who were misled by their families if it never went beyond simply repeating that whisper, but when you start using it as a form of - what else can we call it? - marketing, it’s so harmful.

And when you add to it that there are a host of potential benefits - scholarships, awards, or cultural credibility - people feel the need to turn up the volume on that family whisper and create an entire identity out of it. This is the craven and avaricious part.

Indeed it can feel for some like a way of softening one’s sense of responsibility for the problems of colonization and the ongoing struggles of Indig Nations. Seductive to allow yourself and your family a way out of culpability.

For many white Canadians, the hint of a distant Indigenous ancestor (real or imagined) is a fun spice to add to one’s identity box — something that comes with no strings attached in terms of intergenerational trauma, lived oppression, or even obligation to living communities.

The thing I think few white people want to talk about is just how common it is for there to be a (totally unevidenced) “family whisper” of a connection, and for so many of us to - in what can at best be described as fits of vanity - go running with it without bothering to double check.
