When he died, my grandfather chose to become a rock.

I don’t know why he chose a rock. I thought he’d chose something papery, us being Jewish, people of the Book, and all that.
I thought he’d choose to be a tree.
A great, thick oak, with branches that would hang over the wall he’d loved to look out on, a home to the little song birds he watched in the mornings.
But no, he chose a rock, a grand, craggy rock. The sort you could spot from a boat. The sort that changed only in how much of it was under the water at any given time of day. Silent but ever present, where water met sky.
But then, wasn’t he a grand, craggy base of a man? And us, the rest of his family, the dithery seabirds that wheeled above and around him. We squealed and squabbled in turn.

So yesterday they had a Newfoundland demonstration at Mystic Seaport. They brought in a bunch of Newfoundlands to pull sleds and bring in boats from the water like they used to do in ports all across the Northeast coastline.

Update: yeah that pretty much slapped. I liked when Ryan Miller broke containment for a bit there. Also loved hearing songs from the new Mountain Goats album!!! These groups always bring it so hard for the live shows even my old ass was happy to schlep out there.
