even though I know every signal in the Melbourne CBD has automatic ped greens I still press the button like 80% of the time to be fair

this would pretty much be the only accessibility improvement that could be made to the PB5 and would be great to see

it's a very widespread misunderstanding as well as a cultural thing, most people also don't know all our traffic lights run on detector loops and routinely stop at intersections in a spot too far forward that fails to trigger the lights

all cities in Australia (and many of our neighbouring countries) use slightly different implementations of SCATS, which has heaps of potential but is rarely utilised well

as another point of difference, pretty much every set of signals in the Melbourne CBD automatically calls all pedestrian phases every cycle between 5:30am and 12:30am, but this has been a relatively recent (last 10-15 years) development. not the case in 95% of Melbourne though
December 9, 2025 at 8:00 AM
which would mostly be down to missing the window for calling the pedestrian crossing phase in that cycle so it's logged for next time. it's not too hard to address this when programming the signals but most don't for the other reason: traffic engineers HATE conflict points and we comply with signals
December 9, 2025 at 7:58 AM
general practice in Melbourne is to give pedestrians a 3-5 second head start while holding left turns, then left turners are to give way to pedestrians still crossing. sometimes the pedestrian crossing might keep running. you'd never start a pedestrian crossing once the left turns have a green

compared to the signal operation in the Melbourne or Sydney CBDs it's very stark once you notice. of course everywhere else also has some terrible signals but not as uniformly bad as Perth (Brisbane/Queensland in general comes close to being as bad though)
December 9, 2025 at 7:44 AM
they also give huge amounts of green time to cars everywhere so the cycle times are very very long, worsening the delay. also seems to be very little use of auto-on buttons so it's extremely easy to just miss the window for calling a crossing, despite there being a constant flow of people
December 9, 2025 at 7:44 AM
I'm particularly talking about in the CBD here (suburban roads are a hellscape everywhere here), but Perth has extremely short green times for pedestrians, runs every leg at once but not as a scramble crossing, so crossing to the opposite side of an intersection will always take 2 full cycles
December 9, 2025 at 7:44 AM
Perth traffic signals have got to be the worst for pedestrians in the country by far. no one else is doing it like them
December 8, 2025 at 8:46 PM
Perth definitely the best PT system in the country in terms of how much it gets out of its infrastructure and how well integrated it's been (and amazing for how far it's come from the 80s)

the walkability and land use planning on the other hand...

all the major Australian supermarkets still do this. so many people barely use cash here anymore that it's 50/50 whether you see someone using an actual coin or a plastic token that's the same size (I have a token I keep in my wallet for the trolley)
